Taylor: Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm #1 (or Original Sins 5.1 or whatever)

As an unabashed fan of Thor, I’ve got a keen interest in this story, which aims to introduce a fairly major change to the status quo. Introducing Angela as Thor’s sister could be either a great or a terrible idea, and this initial story will go a long way in determining which. In any event, I have a great deal of trust in Jason Aaron, and Al Ewing has been solid on the Loki book, so it’ll be interesting to see how this collaboration works out.

Original Sin 5.1

THOR & LOKI: THE TENTH REALM #1 (of 5)
Writers: Jason Aaron/Al Ewing
Artist: Simone Bianchi

• Thanks to the events of ORIGINAL SIN, the deepest secret of the Nine Realms is revealed… a Tenth Realm!

• Thor and Loki embark on a quest to discover this strange new world — and the sister Thor never knew he had… Angela!

• But can Loki be trusted? And will brother and sister murder each other before the truth comes out?

Christian: Detective Comics #33

With Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato on this title I knew the art was going to be amazing, but it’s truly surprising that the Icarus story-arc in the current run of Detective Comics is just a wonderful Batman story. With all the Bat-family showing up in Batman Eternal, and Batman proper being a tale of old, I’m really happy that there’s still a Batman book that just stars Batman in a fun adventure.

Gaumer: All-New X-Men #29

It’s a light week for me, but there are still plenty of gems in my stack. Despite great potential in Original Sin #5.1 and amazing art in Detective Comics #33, I’m most looking forward to the siege of the New Xavier School continue in All-New X-Men. Bendis is teetering on the brink of a cliff of time-traveling tropes, and whether he makes it across or falls off the edge, it’s going to be interesting.

Jules: Real Heroes #3

Made famous as the original Ultimate artist, Bryan Hitch is now writing and penciling this title. Imagine Galaxy Quest with superheroes! The stars of the Olympians, after the screening of their second film, are transported to another dimension where the heroes they play on film are real. And since the real Olympians have been murdered they have to pretend to be them until the can help to achieve peace. The first two issues are absolutely spectacular looking, Hitch’s designs are stellar, and with his honest story telling this title has been a solid read. I can’t wait to pick this one up.

Taylor: New Avengers #19

The current story arch of New Avengers crosses an important threshold this week as our protagonists are finally forced to face a team of genuine heroes, with both groups’ worlds hanging in the balance. This book has been skating around the dilemma of making an impossible choice for a long time; will the MU’s defenders finally be forced to do the unthinkable? Hopefully, we’re about to find out.

Christian: Detective Comics #32

There’s lots of Bat-goodness hitting the DC side of new comic shelves this week, and Batman Eternal, BatgirlBirds of Prey, and the rest should be good, but I just can’t wait for the amazing art and surprisingly great story Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato are gifting readers within the pages of Detective Comics #32. A new drug has hit the streets of Gotham, and a new villain for Batman to deal with along with it.

Gaumer: Figment #1

Yeah, Figment #1. I’m not a huge fan of the character, or the idea of Marvel even doing a Disney book like this, but I’m looking forward to Figment #1 for one reason and one reason only: Jim Zub. I’m a big fan of his work on the zany fantasy Skullkickers, a book that has a unique style all its very own, and I can’t wait to see what he brings as he takes on a Marvel title. Yeah, it may be a book starring an obscure Disney character, but Zub is definitely a writer to keep an eye on.

Jules: Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man #1

Brian Michael Bendis has been delivering a Spider-Man tale for my generation since it’s inception at the tail end of the 90’s. This recent reboot comes at a solid time in the Ultimate Universe as the rebuild after 616 Galactus destroyed New Jersey. Now a member the fresh, young Ultimates, how will Miles Morales continue his life and the legacy of Peter Parker the original Ultimate Spider-Man? I’m ready to pick this one up!

Taylor: She-Hulk #4

She-Hulk has been the most pleasant surprise of the year for me, and I’m looking forward to this new issue. With the promise of a showdown with Dr Doom, it’ll be interesting to see how Charles Soule keeps up his blend of super-heroics and legal intrigue. Should be fun!

Christian: Detective Comics #31

Another week, another issue of Batman, but this time it’s not Eternal or vs. Bane, it’s the tour de force of art known as Detective Comics by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato. The job this dynamic duo did on The Flash was special, but the seeing them work on the Bat last ish was an amazing thing to behold. Can’t wait to get into this comic come Wednesday!

Gaumer: The New 52 – Futures End #1

Yes this is just a really big What If? sort of book, yes it’s a weekly investment, and yes I wish they’d punctuate better (of maybe it’s a bunch of futures ending??), but the FCBD #0 issue of this series really got me going, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Batman Beyond travels back in the day to stop Brother Eye from putting the Borg on the entire DCU. This one is going to be fun!

Jesse: Nailbiter #1

Image Comics has been hitting the shelves really hard with number 1’s lately, and I couldn’t be happier about it. The publisher adores topics and stories that the Big 2 won’t touch with a 10-foot pole, and my pick this week is a testament to that fact. Serial killers solving crimes isn’t anything new, but when Scott Snyder says something is a great idea, you listen and listen hard.

Nailbiter 1

NAILBITER #1
story: JOSHUA WILLIAMSON
art / cover: MIKE HENDERSON
MAY 7 / 32 PAGES / FC / M / $2.99
JOSHUA WILLIAMSON & MIKE HENDERSON deliver a mystery that mixes Twin Peaks with the horror of Se7en!

An obsessed FBI profiler investigating the town has suddenly gone missing, and now an NSA Agent must work with the notorious serial killer Edward “Nailbiter” Warren to find his friend and solve the mystery of “Where do serial killers come from?”
“If Josh died I wish he’d leave NAILBITER to me in his will so I could say it was my idea.” — Scott Snyder (SEVERED, Batman, American Vampire)
