Review: Iron Fist the Living Weapon #1

detail (19)

Iron Fist the Living Weapon

Writer: Kaare Kyle Andrews

Artist: Kaare Kyle Andrews

It has been a second since Danny Rand had his own title. Immortal Iron Fist was a great title in the beginning. However it went through some hands and was cancelled. This time around Iron Fist is in one pair of hands. Kaare Kyle Andrew’s handles both writing and the art in this title! I was sure that the art would be spectacular having once before enjoyed Andrew’s art on Astonishing X-Men back in the day. I was curious on Andrew’s writing chops as he embarked on doing both on this new title! Iron Fist replays the events of his becoming the Living Weapon while he systematically trudges through a date. As the night comes to a close who better than Ninja attack a complacent Danny Rand as he stares into his father’s legacy.

The Good

Well, where to start? This first issue was just awesome. Andrew’s classic touch to the flashback pages was brilliant. The art really flowed so well in tandem with his words. I was honestly really impressed with Andrews ability to no only push the story with his wonderful art but with his poetic words. The storytelling in this issue really felt natural for the characters involved. The way Danny Rand seems to just be going through the motions on his date is just so honest to the character, I mean come on his Iron Fist. The man once took on a dragon a plain date must feel real boring. I found this issue to be the right start to a character who needs to be done right the first time. This is one of those sets the bar for the rest of the title first issues, and I really look forward to what Andrews can do with Iron Fist.

The Bad

Well the ninjas did feel like a little much. But honestly, it looked so cool that I can’t really argue and totally play a role in to the set up for the first arc. I don’t really have anything bad to say about this issue, I sure Gaumer does. Ask Mr. Owl!

The Verdict

This was an awesome first issue and is just a show of how strong Marvel is right now. I don’t know if they can maintain this full head of steam pushing forward but I have to say I’m loving it. Kaare Kyle Andrews delivered a beautiful and inspiring first issue to what I expect the best telling of Iron Fist since Fraction, Brubaker, and Aja started the Immortal Iron Fist years ago. This is an awesome issue to pick up. The art is brilliant. The story telling is on point. I mos def recommend it to those who love a cool book.

This issue gets 4 guy with the dragon tattoo’s out of 5
