From time to time Outright Geekery brings you a slanted and biased opinion on some trivially specific topic of geekery. We call it Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot. Dinosaurs aren’t just col right now because of the blockbuster movie Jurassic World. Dinosaurs have ALWAYS been cool! When I was a kid dinos were a really big deal, and although the interest in Terrible Lizards waxes and wanes the ancient animals are always good fodder for fun story telling. And the only thing cooler than simply having a dinosaur in a story is when a character rides one into battle. So, without further ado, we touch on the brand new, go way back in time to the obscure, and give credit to the classics in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: Dinosaur Riding.
Honorable Mention: Dino-Riders
Near the end of the 1980s the toy companies were quickly moving to the end of the whole cartoon cross-promotion, and in 1988 Dino-Riders premiered in conjunction with a toy line of the same name. This show/toys were awesome! Super-human alien good guys and humanoid alien badguys crash land on a prehistoric Earth and do what any technologically advanced aline race would do with dinosaurs: dress them in armor, add LOTS of guns, and ride them! While it was the same sort of cheese than made up most of the 80s toons, Cullen and Welker of Transformers voiceover fame lead the cast. Only 14 episodes, but enough cool dino-riding to fill this entire list.
5. Holly Marshall & Dopey
Marshall, Will, and Holly were on a routine expedition before the legendary Sid & Marty Krofft sent them to the dinosaur filled Land of the Lost on the 1970s show of the same name. In this show was a baby Brontosaurus name Dopey that helped the stranded family as a pack animal, and little Holly Marshall rode that damned thing. This was cool for one reason and one reason only: Stop-motion animation miniatures and real people interacting in ways that simply had not been seen before. It was a show way ahead of its time, and and I have to admit being envious of Holly riding that dino. It looked so real!
4. World of Warcraft Mounts
The game developers at Blizzard Entertainment really know how to make a video game fun. With as many subscribers as Word of Warcraft has, it’s no doubt that the MMO is full of just really cool and fun things to do. One of those fun things is the ability to ride around on dinosaurs. It’s so much fun!
3. Grimlock & Optimus Prime
I;m a huge Transformers fan, but let’s fact it, those movies are not great. They DO have some pretty cool moments, however, and one of the coolest is by far Optimus Prime riding Grimlock in Age of Extinction.
2. Devil Dinosaur & Captain America
Just recently fitting the criteria of this list, but instantly moving up in popularity, Marvel’s current Summer event, Secret Wars, has given us one of the coolest dino/rider duos of all time. Within the pages of Grek Pak and Sam Humphries Planet Hulk tie-in, an alternate version of Captain America becomes a barbarian/gladiator with a Devil-Dinosaur animal companion. It’s so cool!
1. Yoshi & Mario
Nintendo just wouldn’t be Nintendo without Mario, and his faithful companion in (almost) every Mario game since the beginning has been the little green (or yellow, or pink, or…) dinosaur named Yoshi. Sure, he can stomp like the boss, but it’s all about that few seconds of air-time and, of course, that tongue. Super Smash Bros and even his own series of games have pushed the character to nearly the same status as Mario…well, close.
