Review: Secret Wars #3

The Marvel Universe is no more, and everything did, in fact, end as promised…but, something DID end up taking its place in the great vastness of the multiverse, and that something is turning out to be one of the funnest and most compelling event stories to hit comic shop shelves in recent memory. I’m, of course, speaking of Secret Wars and its full range of tie-in comics that can be defined as anything from utter ridiculousness to must-read graphic literature and everything in between. But a good event just isn’t about the scores of tie-ins and is only as good as the main title. Through 2 issues, however, Secret Wars has certainly lived up to its promotional hype and has the potential of being one of the greatest events in the storied history of the publisher. But it’s that ish #3 that makes or breaks an 8 issue series, and Secret Wars #3 is chock full of some of the best event story-telling I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.

Warning: This review may contain spoilers for Secret Wars #3.

Review: Secret Wars #2

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Esad Ribic

Secret Wars #1 left my jaw on the ground and the hairs on the back of my neck permanently in the air. Secret Wars #2 begins with a rite of passage for a young man to join a force of THORS. Thors who guard the entirety of Doom’s kingdom. After the collapse of existence it would seem Doom has created his prefect world, in his perfect vision. City States governed by Barons who answer to the Sheriff Strange and to the almighty Doom. Secret Wars #1 was the end of all we knew of Marvel. Secret Wars #2 is the first glimpse of a fantastical world Doom has put on stage for us, many of the inhabitants have come to call….read the issue. Continue reading Review: Secret Wars #2

Review: Secret Wars #1

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Esad Ribic
Cover: Alex Ross

Everything Ends. The haunting phrase Jonathan Hickman has been trying to get me to wrap my head around since his Avengers run started in 2012. The Multiverse is collapsing. The Beyonders have found existence to be a waste of an experiment. There are only two universes remaining: Earth 616 and Earth 1610. The Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe. This is it. The Legendary Heroes of the 616 going toe to toe with the honest husks left of the Ultimate Universe. Prepare for what’s to come. Prepare for the Real Secret Wars. Marvel ‘Secret Wars’ Primer, Part 3: ‘Everything Ends’

Marvel’s Secret Wars are (almost) finally upon us! It’s been a long and winding road to Battleworld, through Multiversal Incursion after Multiversal Incursion, two different Avengers series, an event or two, and the destruction of the entire Marvel Universe, but we made it. Now, if you have no Earthly idea what any of that means, you are not alone. Jonathan Hickman’s epic sci-fi tale of betrayal, war, destruction, and morality that culminates in Marvel’s 2015 mega-event started way back in 2012 with Avengers #1, quickly became part of Hickman’s other ongoing, New Avengers, swerved right into the Infinity event, and has encompassed nearly 100 single comic book issues.

That’s a whole lot of story to catch up on if you’ve missed out, but this primer series should be all you need to understand exactly what’s lead to Secret Wars, what the event is all about, and even includes a brief tour of Battleworld itself. Even if you have kept up with everything up to this point there still may be some things you can take away from this summary, and I’d love any fact-checking you can provide.

We’re on to the third, and penultimate, part of our Secret Wars Primer covering Time Runs Out, the time-jump that pushed everything months into the future, as we continue to travel down the road to Battleworld. Check our Part 1 and Part 2 of our Secret Wars Primer, and be on the lookout for Part 4: ‘A Brief Tour of Battleworld’.

So, Where we’re going we don’t need roads! Continue reading Marvel ‘Secret Wars’ Primer, Part 3: ‘Everything Ends’
