Top o’ the Lot: Dinosaur Riding

From time to time Outright Geekery brings you a slanted and biased opinion on some trivially specific topic of geekery. We call it Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot. Dinosaurs aren’t just col right now because of the blockbuster movie Jurassic World. Dinosaurs have ALWAYS been cool! When I was a kid dinos were a really big deal, and although the interest in Terrible Lizards waxes and wanes the ancient animals are always good fodder for fun story telling. And the only thing cooler than simply having a dinosaur in a story is when a character rides one into battle. So, without further ado, we touch on the brand  new, go way back in time to the obscure, and give credit to the classics in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: Dinosaur Riding.

Top o’ the Lot: New Comics for the First Half of 2015

From time to time Outright Geekery brings you a slanted and biased opinion on some trivially specific topic of geekery. We call it Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot.

It’s already been a banner year for comic books of every variety this year, but, as always, I like to put my focus on the new. New comics; brand spanking #1s; offer readers an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of greatness, or give them a leg up on some really vague geek trivia. I love the mystery, the novelty of something different, and the chance to share the awesomeness with folks who may have missed out. There were a lot of good, new comics that have already dropped this year, but I narrowed it down to a Lot. So, without further ado,

(Note: To qualify for this list a series must have premiered its first issue between January 7th and June 24th according to Previewsworld.com’s Release Schedule Archive.

Top o’ the Lot: Vehicles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

From time to time Outright Geekery brings you a slanted and biased opinion on some trivially specific topic of geekery. We call it Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot.

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is easily one of the best action movie series of all time. It has everything: Amazing characters, awesome fights, and really, REALLY, cool technology. Among this technology are ray-guns, super suits, even flying hammers, but nothing in the MCU is quite as cool as the plethora of vehicles. Cars, boats, spaceships and more, the list of amazing automobilia goes on and on, but I whittled it down to just the very best of the best. So, without further ado, it flies, you’re not supposed Marvel Studios Logoto do that with bikes, and who was driving that thing? in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: Vehicles from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Top o’ The Lot: Non-Big 2 Comics That Should be TV Shows

Honorable Mention: X-O Manowar

I’m sure man of you have seen X-O over the years from either it’s original inception or its current run and thought what’s up with the weird looking Iron Power Ranger. Well it’s so much more than you think. A Visogoth, a warrior from the old world looking to take down the Romans and reclaim his home when he’s suddenly taken by a strange alien race. Yeah I know that turned pretty quickly. The vine abduct the best specimens and take them to harvest for them. Enter the Visogoth Aric and his quest to return home and slay his captors. Along the way gets one of the most powerful weapons in the known Galaxy. Hello Game of Thrones meets Battlestar Galatica. Of all the Valiant titles this one can stand on its own with never having to mingle with the others, however that’s not to say it wouldn’t be cool. I just think this story has so much more going on and shouldn’t be restricted by being a 2hour film. This series could go the distance. Top o’ the Lot: Comic Book Shapeshifters

From time to time Outright Geekery brings you a slanted and biased opinion on some trivially specific topic of geekery. We call it Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot.

Being able to change one’s shapes is a pretty popular superpower in comic books. Heroes and villains, both old and new have been able to change their shape in one way…shape or form, and narrowing down my favorites into this list was definitely a tough one. But, I managed through and put only the best on the pedestal that is the Top o’ the Lot. So, without further ado, we skip the villains (mostly), love the mutants (a lot), and Are you sure he was in a comic book?, in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: Comic Book Shapeshifters.

Behind every great super-hero, and even some not-so-great ones, is a supporting character. While the sidekick first gained popularity as a way to have more characters that teenage comic book readers could relate to, the sidekick quickly became a mainstay, supporting its own stable of viable characters, many of which have risen to A-List level. So without further ado, we mention the obvious, give credit where credit is due, and remember when he was just knee high to a grasshopper, in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: Comic Book Sidekicks. Top o’ the Lot: Single Issue Stories – Wolverine

From time to time Outright Geekery brings you a slanted and biased opinion on some trivially specific topic of geekery. We call it Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot.

As the unique medium that they are, comic books can tell stories in very distinct ways, even within the medium itself. While the majority of comic book stories are 5-6+ issue arcs, amongst the long-form tales can be found single issue gems that shine all on their own in self-contained wonder. These are the best single issue stories starring Wolverine.

Wolverine Beer 3I miss him. I’m not ashamed to say it. Despite my whining about so many Wolverine comic books being on shelves prior to his death, I miss the little runt. Researching this article reminded me of just how many really cool Wolverine stories there have been over the years. But, in the end, it was easy to pick these top single issue stories. So, without further ado, he’s still the best, we have the proof, and SNIKT, in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: Single Issue Stories – Wolverine.

(This list does not include One-Shots; only single issues from an ongoing series that happened to tell a single, self-contained story)
