ULTIMATELY THE BEST CHOICE

ULTIMATE MARVEL

Now I know what you are thinking, who cares about Ultimate Marvel? Well for one JulesTrue does, and I’m here to let you know it’s pretty frickin awesome if you give it a chance. Once a week I’m gonna hit you with a story arc from the Ultimate Marvel Universe starting from the beginning. I’ll spotlight on whats brilliant, what’s not so brilliant, and what might be a good idea for the 616!

This week being the first week only makes sense for me to start with what started it all! That’s right folks we start with the Ultimate Universe’s namesake and launch title! From the creative minds of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagely came this gem!

Ultimate_Spider-Man_Vol_1_1

PANDR

The new millineum had just kicked off and Marvel had decided to launch a new branding. Ultimate Spider-Man was the first in this new alternate universe. Meet the new young and relevant teenage Peter Parker. We hit the scene in Osborn Industries and Norman Obsorn and company are trying to crack a new Super Soldier Serum. A experimental spider goes missing while the experiement s are being conducted. Meanwhile kids from Midtown High are on a field trip. Among them is Peter Parker, a young brilliant scientist with dreams of someday maybe working in a place like Osborn Industries. While on the the experimental spider bites Parker on the hand. Curious about the incident incase of lawsuit Osborn has Parker tracked incase of any side effects.

image(6)image(7)

After several instances of fainting and displaying extraordinary strength and reflexes, Peter realises the bite gave him powers. On one occasion, Peter breaks his bully, Flash Thompson’s hand. Flash’s family then decides to sue the Parkers! Peter begins to grow interested in just how far he can push his abilities. He quickly joins a local wrestling circuit as the “Amazing Spider-Man” where they give him his costume.  Peter also anonymously pay for his Aunt May and Uncle Ben’s legal fees.

image(8)image(9)

Peter does not reveal this secret double-life to anybody, not even his crush Mary Jane Watson and friend Harry Osborn. Peter flees the wrestling organisation after being accused of stealing. Disgruntled, he allows a burglar to escape after robbing a deli owner. Peter returns home where his aunt and uncle berate him for his failing academic grades. Ben informs Peter of the “with great power, comes great responsibility” ethos that Peter’s father abided by. Peter runs away only to return to find that Uncle Ben had been murdered by the same burglar Peter had earlier ignored. Peter tracks down Ben’s killer, subdues him and hands the killer over to the police, now understanding what Ben had previously told him.

image(2)image(4)

Meanwhile, Norman Osborn injects himself with an OZ formula, gaining confidence by tracking the effects the spider formula had on Peter. As a result, Norman turns into the monstrous Green Goblin. The Goblin destroys the lab, kills several scientists and leaves Dr. Otto Octavius, another scientist, for dead. All this is seen by Harry Osborn who runs home to find his mother dead and his house in flames, noticing his father’s goblin form leaving the scene.

image(3)

Peter, having now invented web-shooters for his alter-ego, Spider-Man, went back to school to find the Green Goblin destroying it. After a small skirmish in the school, Spider-Man leads the Goblin to the bridge where the NYPD confront him. The Green Goblin is shot off the bridge. The NYPD also turn on Spider-Man who retreats. Peter goes back to the school, using the excuse that he had been crushed under a chalkboard. Harry moves to live with relatives elsewhere.

image(5)image(1)image

Needless to say this is a strong opening arc to what will be an incredible title. Bendis really nails the idea of a Spider-Man for a more relevant generation. This is my Spider-Man the one I feel the most connection for. Mark Bagley’s art is just classic and really sets the tone for how this title plays out. His character designs really created the Ultimate Universe. I loved this arc, and I’m sure you will too! Check it out and check out all my upcoming Ultimate Arc Articles coming your way!!!

Jules: Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man #2

The last issue was beyond solid. The last page left my jaw on the floor. Is Ultimate Peter Parker Back? Will Miles’ father come back? Miles has a whole lot to figure out! David Marquez owns up to his new Young Gun title. Bendis has honestly yet to slow down on this title. I am super stoked for this issue. You should be!

Christian: The New 52 – Futures End #5

It could have gone two ways with my pick this week, but since both of my choices are weekly books, there will be another one next week, so I flipped a coin and Batman Eternal lost out over The New 52 – Futures End #5. This title has been hit or miss in its first month, but the stage is set for something really big to go down in this issue. Mr. T is a badass mother – shut your mouth – and we hopefully see his evil, universe destroying tech this week.

Gaumer: Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #3

There once existed a time at Marvel Comics when labels like writer, artist, cover artist, storyteller, and the like weren’t so damned important. Steranko, Kirby, Ditko. Yeah sure, these guys are artists, okay. But you know what else they were? Amazing writers! There’s a certain quality that a comic book adopts when there’s one person – a single creative mind – doing EVERYTHING on a title, and that’s exactly what we’ve been getting with Kaare Andrews’ Iron Fist: The Living Weapon. I’m hoping that the same creative synergy Andrews has been gifting readers in the first two issues continues in this book, and I’ll find out first thing Wednesday.

Jules: Ultimate FF #2

Picking up the pieces as the Ultimate Universe is in disarray! New Jersey was destroyed by Galactus. S.H.I.E.L.D. was disassembled thanks to law suits. The original Ultimates have called it a day with a teen squad taking their place. The FF now are all that stands between destruction and the world. Iron Man, Falcon, Invisible Woman, Machine Man, and Doom?…. Yes this title is going in all the right places already. A kick in the pants the Ultimate Universe has needed for quite sometime! I’m picking it up and I’m hoping you do too!

Taylor: Thor: God of Thunder #22

Maintaining its position as the king of my pull list, Thor: God of Thunder hits the shelves this week. This issue comes at a key point for both of our parallel story arches, as we now move on to the fallout of both Roxxon’s nefarious takeover and King Thor’s bout with Galactus. This title continues to impress month after month, and I have no reason to doubt that this issue will deliver as well.

Christian: Futures End #3

I know what you’re all thinking but yes I have a pick of the week. Futures end has been pretty interesting for me as a DC fan, and I’m hoping in this issue to see Terry finding out more about Brother Eye and how to stop this world changing event from ever happening. Hopefully we get all more action in this issue to balance out the death of a beloved archer.

Gaumer: Forever Evil #7

Wait! What is that? It can’t be. I thought it was a myth, like Watchmen 2, or that Stan Lee is an actual LMD, but it’s happening. Forever Evil is finally wrapping up, and it’s about time. Delayed for at least 2 months, and subsequently throwing off the launch schedule of a huge part of the DC line, I’m still excited to see how they wrap this whole thing up. I DO have to go back and re-read the previous issues for a refresher, but I’m hoping that’s the worst part of this great, albeit really late, event.

Jules: All-New Ultimates #2

I really dug on the first issue! Michel Fife has brought the Ultimate Universe it’s sorta own New Warriors! It may not be your parents Ultimates but it certain is a new take on the Ultimates Franchise. A younger step in the next directions something the Ultimate Universe has had the advantage of doing is moving forward with its heroes. Letting characters die and stay dead. This youthful Ultimates is just what the doctor ordered as they take on the Serpent Skull Gang( Ultimate Serpent Society) I’m excited to see what happens next!

Taylor: Avengers #29

As Original Sin ramps up, it seems that many characters’ past transgressions will come back to haunt them. And for the Avengers, that means we’ll get some pay off to a plot point that’s been simmering for over a year as the Illuminati’s manipulation of Captain America is finally brought to light. This promises to have some high drama, and should make for a good read.

Gaumer: Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #1

It doesn’t feel like that long ago that I would sit back on a Saturday afternoon and enjoy a really bad, but really awesome, old-school Kung-Fu movie. The bad voice-over, the cheesy sound effects, the over-the-top karate action! It was almost too much for my childhood self, and I’m looking for that same sort nostalgia, albeit with an updated feel, from Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #1. Will it deliver? I’m betting the top spot on my stack this week that it will.

Jules: Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man #1

Brian Michael Bendis has been delivering a Spider-Man tale for my generation since it’s inception at the tail end of the 90’s. This recent reboot comes at a solid time in the Ultimate Universe as the rebuild after 616 Galactus destroyed New Jersey. Now a member the fresh, young Ultimates, how will Miles Morales continue his life and the legacy of Peter Parker the original Ultimate Spider-Man? I’m ready to pick this one up!

Christian: Detective Comics #31

Another week, another issue of Batman, but this time it’s not Eternal or vs. Bane, it’s the tour de force of art known as Detective Comics by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato. Gaumer: The New 52 – Futures End #1

Yes this is just a really big What If? sort of book, yes it’s a weekly investment, and yes I wish they’d punctuate better (of maybe it’s a bunch of futures ending??), but the FCBD #0 issue of this series really got me going, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Batman Beyond travels back in the day to stop Brother Eye from putting the Borg on the entire DCU. This one is going to be fun!

Jesse: Nailbiter #1

Image Comics has been hitting the shelves really hard with number 1’s lately, and I couldn’t be happier about it. The publisher adores topics and stories that the Big 2 won’t touch with a 10-foot pole, and my pick this week is a testament to that fact. Serial killers solving crimes isn’t anything new, but when Scott Snyder says something is a great idea, you listen and listen hard.

“If Josh died I wish he’d leave NAILBITER to me in his will so I could say it was my idea.” — Scott Snyder (SEVERED, Batman, American Vampire)
