Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: August 27th, 2014

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Taylor: Avengers #34

Cap’s tumultuous tour through time comes to it’s conclusion this week as the current arc draws to a close. It’s been a pretty fun ride with some interesting looks forward at some possible futures. This week, though, it’s high time for some answers; if we don’t get a big payoff here at the end, this arc will have spent a long time spinning its wheels without accomplishing much. Sure hope that doesn’t happen.

Adam: Guardians of the Galaxy #18

To be perfectly honest, this book has been a mixed bag for me lately. Bendis has the characters nailed but has failed to come up with any memorable stories so far. Hopefully that changes here when he explains one of the biggest mysteries from the last volume of this book. What did happen to Richard Ryder in the Cancerverse?

Gaumer: Wayward #1

I must be a glutton for punishment, because it seems like every Image Comics #1 that drops ends up on my permanent pull-list. And, damn it, here’s another one! Wayward is a supernatural tale promising the camaraderie and emotion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer combined with the action and mystery of Hellboy. If writer Jim Zub delivers on just half of that promise this should be awesome!

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER FOR A NEW GENERATION!
Rori Lane is trying to start a new life when she reunites with her mother in Japan, but ancient creatures lurking in the shadows of Tokyo sense something hidden deep within her, threatening everything she holds dear. Can Rori unlock the secrets of her power before it’s too late?
JIM ZUB (SKULLKICKERS, Samurai Jack), STEVE CUMMINGS (Legends of the Dark Knight, Deadshot), and JOHN RAUCH (INVINCIBLE) team up to create an all-new Image supernatural spectacle that combines the camaraderie and emotion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with the action and mystery of Hellboy. Don’t miss it!

Jules: Low #2

The first issue was a spectacular tale with the depths of sci fi fantasy the kind of mash up that works best in comics! Rick Remender who has been absolutely on fire. Greg Tocchini’s art is simply brilliant on this title and I’ve only seen the first issue. The creative team shares a past I’m more than familiar with and it shows as the art and story do such a great job of complimenting one another! I’m beyond stoked to see where this depths of the earth revenge scifi story with a fantasy twist to it!

The underwater city of Salus, humanity’s last refuge, is running out of air and time. Poverty, disease, and corruption are rampant, and the church of Optimolgy can offer no solace as powerful as hard cream, the strange drug that keeps the bleak realities at bay. Police Inspector Marik Cain has sunk so low into that haze; should an opportunity for hope present itself, can he again?
