Review: Wayward #6

This week we see the return of Wayward to the book shelves. The series has been on a hiatus since Mid-December, following the somewhat climactic cliffhanger ending of issue #5. Issue #6 starts the second story arc, which picks up three months after the events in issue #5 (I see what you did there, Zub).

We are introduced to a new character, Ohara Emi. She seems like your typical teenage Japanese girl, until she starts exhibiting the ability to absorb materials she comes in contact with and experiences a vision of Rori. Just how is Ohara connected to Rori? More importantly, why do the spirits want her dead? Continue reading Review: Wayward #6

Wayward #4 Review

In this latest issue of Wayward, events are picking up for Rori and the gang. Think of this one as a team-building exercise for our “Monster Mashers”. Between Wayward, Goners and Oddly Normal, Image Comics is quickly becoming my go-to source for good supernatural stories. Hat’s off to Zub, Jim Zub is doing a superb job crafting a supernatural world that is both fun and exciting to get immersed in, the series truly has a very Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibe about it. I’m digging Steve Cumming’s artwork. It’s simply wonderful to take in, the panels are fluid and capture the urban setting of the story with so much detail. Check out this preview. I’ve been following the work of writer Jim Zub since I first discovered his 2010 fantasy knee-slapper Skullkickers, making me an instant fan. Most of Zub’s work thrusts readers right into the midst of the action, pushing the overall pacing by forcing readers to play catchup. His lead-ins and introductions in previous books have resembled anything but a typical methodology. Which makes Wayward an unexpected yet refreshing departure from Zub’s previous work. While the slow crawl has been full of interesting character introductions, the overarching story has yet to fully reveal itself, leaving readers wondering what exactly Wayward is, and pondering if they want to hang out long enough to find out.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER FOR A NEW GENERATION!
Rori Lane is trying to start a new life when she reunites with her mother in Japan, but ancient creatures lurking in the shadows of Tokyo sense something hidden deep within her, threatening everything she holds dear. Can Rori unlock the secrets of her power before it’s too late?

I’ve been a big fan of writer Jim Zub’s work for a rather long time, and his previous work on books like Skullkickers and Marvel’s Figment are great examples of the wit and whimsy Zub brings to a book. While his latest comic book Wayward is quite the departure from those other books, it was a pleasant surprise, and although Wayward #1 is a slow start to the series, the potential of the story is wildly evident and carried by outstanding work on art.
