Top o’ the Lot Comic Book Characters by Color: Blue

Hello, Geeks, and welcome to a very special installment of Outright rainbowGeekery’s Top o’ the Lot. I say it’s special because I’ve decided to get back to the spirit of what Top o’ the Lot was originally conceived to be, namely, the completely weird, slanted, and biased rundown of some trivially specific and arbitrary list of geek goodness. So, I’ve decided to do a series of comic book lists all revolving around characters and color, and what better way to spotlight all of the colors of the rainbow, and kill a Roy G. Biv’s worth of ToLs in a single day, then running down the colors in order. So, without further ado, Blue his house, with a blue little window, and a blue corvette (Da Ba Dee), in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot Comic Book Characters by Color: Blue!

Honorable Mention: Blooey Blue

Blooey BlueWho? Yeah, this is one of those obscure ones, but he was pretty awesome at least one time. Blooey was one third of the WWII era team Red, White, and Blue, made up of a Marine, an Army soldier, and, Blue, a Navy Seaman. They were kind of campy…alright, they were really campy, but they were pretty awesome in Kingdom Come by Waid and Ross. With their updated armor, cool weapons, and Lex Luthor mind control, Blue was more than just a kissable face, he was one third of a cool team. Well, cool enough for honorable mention, anyways.

5. Bluebeard

Fables modern-day throwback to the Bluebeard 2always in style savoir faire, Bluebeard was a great lead-in to showing off all of what Fables has to offer. His wealth, use of magic, and forgiveness of past crimes really did a lot to help solidify the story being told in Fables, while his drama with Rose Red, backdoor political dealings, and personal goblin butler Hobbes, all added depth to potential of this amazing series very early in the overall run, and Bluebeard is just one example of the great characters in Fables, and his name has the word ‘blue’ in it, so he makes the Lot.

4. Blue Streak

Blue StreakAnother I had to dust off to put in the Lot, Blue Streak has actually been around for awhile AND has been around fairly recently…but it was in a less-than-successful title. Blue Streak first appeared way back in 1978 in Captain America #217 at the height of the downfall of disco, which happened to include some skate-dancing to the Bee Gees and whatnot (man, that sounds like fun!), and Blue Streak was an attempt to get in on the fad by getting around on some super-roller skates. Yeah, I know. He could roll on those 8-wheeled sneakers at over 125mph! In 2006 a different Blue Streak laced up his skates in Heroes for Hire volume 2, with an updated pair of, you guessed it!, roller blades. Yeah, they missed that fad by a few years too.

3. Blue Jay

Debuting in Justice League of America #87 in 1971, Blue Jay isn’t Blue Jayreally anything more than a knockoff character, but that was the whole point. The Champions of Angor were a team of heroes from an alien planet that met up with the Justice League as each team was trailing a world-destroying robot, and the two teams immediately fought. The cool part about Blue Jay and his team, despite being names after one of the most viscous members of the avian community, is the way DC and Marvel were copying each other with this team, and Marvel’s Squadron Supreme, and with flight and shrinking powers, Blue Jay was a direct knockoff of Marvel’s Yellowjacket. I’m not sure why the Squadron Supreme gets more attention than these guys, but the Champions deserve some love.

2. Blue Marvel

Mighty Avengers 3Football star turned, war hero, turned superhero, the Blue Marvel holds a special place in my heart due to the fact that he’s a boyhood dream come true for a very talented, and underrated, writer, namely Kevin Grevioux. He had the idea for this character way back when he was a kid, and to think that the Underworld creator was actually able to bring his childhood hero; maybe his very first creative creation; to Marvel Comics, where the character can STILL be seen in current books, is an inspiration to everyone out there to keep dreaming, keep working, and positive results will follow.

1. Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle 1It doesn’t matter how old you are, literally, If you are alive, there’s been a Blue Beetle for you. The character is timeless, and despite having multiple character taking on the moniker, there’s been a Blue Beetle around in one way, shape, of form since 1939’s Mystery Men Comic #1, and from the original Dan Garrett, to Ted Kord, to Jaimie Reyes, from drug-induced powers, supernatural confusion, to scarab possession, from Kingdom Come, to The New 52, to Young Justice, there’s a Blue Beetle for us all, and we all should really start loving Blue Beetle if you don’t already. It’s not just the whole ‘blue’ thing that puts Blue Beetle at the tippy Top o’ this Lot, he’s easily the coolest Blue character in comics.Blue Beetle 2
