During Wizard World Nashville this weekend, I had the opportunity to sit down with legendary animator Tom Bancroft. We reminisced about his long and storied career at Disney, talked about his love for traditional hand-drawn animation, and discussed what he’s been working on recently. It’s been a rumor for a few days now, but at Wizard World Nashville on Saturday, which Outright Geekery is covering, William Shatner confirmed that he was in fact contacted by J.J. Abrams about appearing in Star Trek 3.
“I’m calling because the director of Star Trek, the next movie, has had an idea where you might be involved, so I’m calling to find out whether you would be interested,” Shatner said, quoting Abrams during a phone call a couple of weeks ago.
“It depends on what you do with the character, but I would be delighted,” Shatner replied. Shatner said he was sworn to secrecy, and also said, …”they might want Leonard and myself in it. But I would love to do it.”
Shatner went on to question just how director Robert Orci would fit a 50 year in the future Captain Kirk into the film, and we can’t help but wonder the same thing.
Our very own Outright Geek, David, is covering Wizard World Nashville comic con RIGHT NOW! Saturday, September 27th, and if you track him down on the show floor and tell him the “phrase that pays” you’ll get your hands on some free swag courtesy of Comix City Too!, Outright Geekery’s favorite comic book shop in the whole wide world.
Here’s a pic of David taken today from the con, find him, and say “Goodnight, Elaine!”, and get your hands on some free stuff.
Check back with us all day long for live coverage of the convention, and look for our extended coverage coming throughout the week.
First up, an animation writer extraordinaire known for his on He-Man, She-Ra, and Bravestarr, Robert Lamb. We were able to interview Mr. Lamb prior to his Wizard World Nashville appearance.
And you can bet your sweet ass, we’re going! That’s right, Geeks, the great folks at Wizard World have seen to it that we represent our hometown in style, and has granted Outright Geekery press access to Wizard World Nashville, September 26, 27, & 28 at the Music City Center in beautiful and historic downtown Nashville, Tennessee. We are proud and honored to be given this opportunity, and we look forward to bringing you the best news and exclusives from the show floor in a couple of weeks.
Our Con Correspondent and Editor in Charge of Outside Talent (a new title I just created), David, will be talking up the talent, blogging the panels, and dishing the scoop on all the news from the show floor. If you’re going to the con yourself, and if you can find him in the wild, say ‘hello’. And if, like most of us, you can’t make it to Wizard World Nashville later this month, stick with Outright Geekery for reports, news, and interviews from the show.
This is a huge step for Outright Geekery, and it’s the things we’ve done here that have lead us to where we are, and it’s a sign that future success is surely on the horizon. We’d like to send out a big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who has supported us, and promise you that we’re only getting started.
