Jules: All-New Ultimates #2

I really dug on the first issue! Michel Fife has brought the Ultimate Universe it’s sorta own New Warriors! It may not be your parents Ultimates but it certain is a new take on the Ultimates Franchise. A younger step in the next directions something the Ultimate Universe has had the advantage of doing is moving forward with its heroes. Letting characters die and stay dead. This youthful Ultimates is just what the doctor ordered as they take on the Serpent Skull Gang( Ultimate Serpent Society) I’m excited to see what happens next!

Taylor: Avengers #29

As Original Sin ramps up, it seems that many characters’ past transgressions will come back to haunt them. And for the Avengers, that means we’ll get some pay off to a plot point that’s been simmering for over a year as the Illuminati’s manipulation of Captain America is finally brought to light. This promises to have some high drama, and should make for a good read.

Christian: Batgirl #31

There’s a lot of books I’m looking forward to this week – Futures End #2, Batman Eternal #6, Batman & Frankenstein – but all those books are missing one very important thing: Gail Simone. And she’s bringing Ragdoll back? This makes the top of my stack easy.

Gaumer: Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #1

It doesn’t feel like that long ago that I would sit back on a Saturday afternoon and enjoy a really bad, but really awesome, old-school Kung-Fu movie. The bad voice-over, the cheesy sound effects, the over-the-top karate action! It was almost too much for my childhood self, and I’m looking for that same sort nostalgia, albeit with an updated feel, from Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #1. Will it deliver? I’m betting the top spot on my stack this week that it will.

Review: All New Ultimates #1

detail (17)

All-New Ultimate #1

Writer: Michel Fiffe

Artist: Amilcar Pinna

Let me be the first to say this isn’t your parent’s Ultimates. This is a step in a new direction for the Ultimates. Taking the group of misfit teens from Brian Michael Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man. A new much younger Ultimates is assembled in this issue. Staring the Ultimate Universe’s Kitty Pryde, Spider-Woman(Now the Ultimate Black Widow), Spider-Man, Bombshell, Cloak and Dagger. This is obviously a different kind of Teen Team. One that is trying to take themselves more seriously. Their Universe’s S.H.I.E.L.D. is now completely defunct and the surving members of the orignal Ultimates have left to purse new things. The legacy of the Ultimate is left in the hands of these young heroes.

The Good

It was def a good call to not make Miles Morales(Ultimate Spidey) the focal point in the story. Morales may be the most popular Ultimate Character, but he has his own title. The focus on Kitty’s confusion with her new found popularity for saving the world and confusion on how to move forward really made for some convincing plot. I liked Jessica Drew(Formerly Ultimate Spider-Woman now new Black Widow) taking charge of the team and pressing them to work harder. The Skull Serpent Gang is honestly a cool homage to the Serpent Society from the 616 and I totally dug it. Pinna art nails the look of everyone early which is def what you need in a 1st issue. I think this is a great step in the right direction, doing something we have all thought about. What if the young heroes got their chance to take the mantle from the Originals. While we may never seen the Young Avenger become the Avengers. We can see these Ultimate young heroes take the Ultimates Mantle!

The Bad

This is certainly not the easiest first issue to get if you haven’t been reading Ultimate Spider-Man. Its fine to ignore previous Ultimates titles but you kinda needed to read Ultimate Spider-Man right before Cataclysm to know just what is going on. A lot is thrown in to this issue which is pulled for the rest of the Ultimate Universe. While the team is all new Ultimates, not a very all new start to them meeting. If you don’t get that this is more of a replacement of Ultimate X-Men as the teen heroes, then you might now understand why the Ultimate are so young. Ultimate FF will certainly be the real Ultimates replacement.

The Verdict

Having recent become a fan of the Ultimate Universe this is def one of those examples what they can do in the Ultimate Universe that can’t be done in regular continuity. It’s a cool concept and I really hope it can go all the places its meant to. I enjoyed what was laid out in this issue and think it can only get better from here. This is not for everyone. I’m sure all the hardcore Ultimates Fans did not like this issue, and the Hardcore Ultimate Spider-Man fans loved it. As regular 616 Marvel readers you know the Ultimate Universe may not be for you. As a long time All Marvel fan I liked this issue and will pick up the next one.

This issue got 3 Ultimate Teen Brigades out of 5

Jules: Cataclysm: The Ultimates Last Stand #5 of 5

I’m really looking forward to the final issue of Cataclysm. It has been a really enjoyable little event over in the Ultimate Universe, and I can’t wait to see where they take the Ultimate Universe from here! What’s left of the Ultimate X-Men are now fighting the good fight. Most of Ultimate S.H.I.E.L.D. is gone. What’s left has to put an end to this. This is it. I’ve really enjoyed the way Bendis and Fiakolov handled the whole thing and I want the end. Plus, I’m a huge fan of Mark Bagely’s art, he’s pretty much Marvel Royalty. Just how do the Ultimates stop 616 Galactus for good?!

Gaumer:  The Wake # 6 of 10

It seems like forever since this last came out, but the first half of The Wake was so very good that the second half is well worth the wait. A 200 hundred year time jump means plenty of surprises should be in store, and I cannot wait! Flooded wastelands? Apocalypse by Ocean? Mermaid monster cities? Whatever it is, it’ll be the top book on my stack come Wednesday afternoon.

Taylor: Fantastic Four #1

This week brings us the relaunch of Fantastic Four, one of Marvel’s cornerstone franchises, with James Robinson and Leonard Kirk at the helm. It’s good for Marvel when their first family is in a strong book, and the FF have always been at their best when they’ve embraced a grand scope and high-flying adventure. I’m looking forward to seeing the tone of this relaunch, and hoping that it can be the start of something good.

Crimson Chris: Batman/Superman #8

This title has been surprisingly awesome. Greg Pak has certainly delivered DC’s two giants of night and day in the way we actually want them to be, instead of how we expect it to be. This time around Power Girl and Huntress, the New 52’s Worlds Finest meets the O.G.’s! Let’s remember, Power Girl and Huntress are stuck here from Earth 2 so just how will they react when they come face to face with a long since dead Cousin and Father?! In only it’s eighth issue this is the title you need to catch up on! Do not miss this one!

J. Jonah Jesse: Dead Class #2

Solid first issue no matter how many ways you cut it. It was fun, it was different from what’s being done right now. I’m really looking forward to what happens in the this issue. I love the art. Being a huge Rick Remender fan and everything he’s doing over at Marvel this indie title really looks like it’s gonna be one worth picking up. I mean, come on! Assassin Prep school? That’s just an awesome little concept as long as long as it gets handled the right way.
