Writer: Brian Michael Bendis

Artist: Olivier Coipel

Jules True back again and guess what folks its time for another one of those trades i recommend for you to grab from your local comic book store. As we know it was only a matter of time for me, Outright Geekery’s self proclaimed Mr. Marvel, to do a Marvel trade! Not more than a stones throw away in time was this title changing the game for comics. When House of M first hit, it was like a ton of bricks. Not in a while had an event affected the entire Marvel-616. Coming off the heals of Avengers Dissembled this one really knocked it out of the park. House of M was pure glory and in my opinion the cornerstone for Bendis’ Avengers run. Olivier Coipel really hit the nail on the head, in that I couldn’t imagine anyone doing the art for this one but him. House of M was one of the first it what would be many big Universe shaping events for Marvel, but honestly this one still stands above the rest as far as containing all the best story in this main trade.

HouseOfM1Gatefold

House of M picks begins as Avengers Dissembled ended, The Scarlet Witch has lost her mind and had destroyed the Avengers Mansion along with several Avengers. (One of which being Jack of Hearts, you can find a lovely little article about him I did, in case you have no idea who he is). In her deteriating state, Professor X and Magneto struggle to understand just how to handle her. The Professor then gather the Avengers and X-Men to discuss just what to do about the Scarlet Witch. She has become a danger to herself, and her friends. Since she has the ability to warp reality it stands that all of existence as they know it is in ever present danger. So as they try to tackle Scarlet Witch, a giant white light engulfs everyone and they soon find themselves in another world. A world where mutants are the majority and humans are the minority. A world where the House of Magnus rules. And only Wolverine has any idea what just happened? How will he make it all right?

Suffice to say this is a brilliant story and is one of the alternate reality stories done absolutely right. Olivier Coipel really brought a genius new world to life. The look to this story is hands down incredible! The House of M designs are just plain cool. I really dug the mutant S.H.I.E.L.D. suits they had some serious class to them. Coipel’s Hawkeye costume is probably my favorite costume Hawkeye has ever worn! From the look to of the new Sentinels, to Spider-Mans costume, to the luscious landscapes going on in the background. Coipel simply blew me away on this book! This is what you expect a serious superhero comic to look like. The costumes are vibrant, the character work feels personal, and you feel like you really see everything going on. Its one of those stories where there seemed to have been nothing loss between writer and artist. Bendis and Coipel produced a serious masterpiece in this one for me folks.

My next question is, why aren’t you reading this. House of M is one of those stories which I love to pick up and reread. Its a ton of fun. Bendis brought the first step in the Avengers and X-Men together. If you’re a fan of either team this is an AWESOME trade to grab. Even if you had no idea what was goin on in their plot at the time, Bendis does a great job at filling in the gaps as to what was happening without slowing the story down. Which is one of the best things about this story, it does not slow down. Start to finish House of M was set at the right pace which reads perfectly in trade. Olivier Coipel just has the perfect style to deliver this kind of story, a story you’re sure to love. A purchase I hope you make soon at your local comic book store, I don’t think you’ll regret it!

Till next time folks I’m down.¬†If you have something you want me to check out and recommend maybe next week, let me know! If you’re in the Greater Nashville Area you can pick up all the trades I recommend at Comix City Too! in Madison, Tn…SON OF MADI…

Tradeback Throwback: The Long Halloween

Writer: Jeph Loeb

Artist: Tim Sale

Jules True here again folks, and I’m bringing a classic this week with me. For those who follow our internetings you may or may not know I’m Outright Geekery’s self proclaimed Mr. Marvel. So I thought I’d change things up and talk about easily one of the best purchases you could make at your local comic store. It just happens to be a DC trade. Batman the Long Halloween for me is the best Batman story there is, hands down. So much of the Batman you find in various other forms draws from this particular work of pure brilliance. Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale really set the new standard for Batman stories after the completing this masterpiece. A story so good I own three different pressings of the trade itself. I mean a wonderful story I’m about to gush about is awesome but man is Tim Sale’s art in a whole league of its own!

The Long Halloween follows Gotham City’s Dark Knight as he tries to stop a seriel killer Holiday, who as the name suggests, murders every month for a year on a holiday. The story is set sometime in Batman’s early days, pre-Robin. Most of the story he finds himself working alongside Commissioner Jim Gordon and newly Appointed District Attorney Harvey Dent. The three of them work hard to stop Holiday each month but to make matters worse Gotham’s two biggest crime families, Maroni and Falcone, are in the middle of a war. Throughout the story Batman goes through all the heavy hitters in his Rogues Gallery. One of the best things about this story is the fact that you get to see almost every villain you’d want to. Even one you didn’t think you wanted. Calendar Man, a Batman villain of old, plays a pivotal role in the story. While you may not be a fan of his, Calendar Man is the only one who knows the identity of Holiday and is content to watch Batman squirm from the comforts of his Arkham cell.

If you are a fan of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, you will love this story! Honestly you will see iconic scenes from each of those movies and find yourself looking clearly at one of his source materials. Tim Sale just delivers you this maddening twisted Gotham with this awful lingering like death is at the door. An art of beyond the standard of you would normally find in a comic book. A wholesomely different approach to what Batman is normally stylized in. Each page like a painting you wish was hanging in your parlor, Tim Sale’s art is spectacular! Between Joker’s big crooked teeth, and all of the Batman silhouettes you will spend hours just looking at the art! It has this Gothic appeal you’ve probably come to associate with Batman the same way I have. Honesty when I think of how Batman and his Rogue Gallery look this is the first thing that comes to mind. Loeb really give you everything you and I guess Tim Sale wanted as far as the list of villains whom appear is long(Scarecrow, Two-Face, Catwoman, Solomon Grundy, Calendar Man, The Riddler, Poison Ivy, The Mad Hatter, and of course the Joker).

If you’ve ever wanted to read a Batman comic book, this is the one to buy. The Long Halloween is a story all its own! Especially if your only introduction to the character is from the movies or television this is the Batman you want! With the amount characters, action, mystery, and chilling story telling! Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale were def at the top of their game when the dropped this one. A sit and binge read till its over trade that will have you revisiting it constantly. So many memorable lines, and panels that will have you throwing this at your non-comic book reading friends and forcing it down their throats! And that’s just if this was your first. A wonderfully enticing Noir Mystery which just happens to be the famous Cape Crusader of the night. A trade I hope you will cherish as much as I have.

Tradeback Throwback: The Nightly News

This week folks I bring you…

the nightly News

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Artist: Jonathan Hickman

Now we all know I had to start this internet version of the best segment on Weekly Recs with Hickman title. I rummaged through my collection and figured the best one to start with was what he started his career with. The Nightly News was a serious way to make a debut on the scene brought to you buy the lovely folks at Image Comics. Like when Tarentino dropped Reservoir Dogs, Hickman comes on of nowhere with nit, grit, and whit in a way you had never thought to apply it. His art is in a category all on its own. Graph and charts to explain demographics you’re not sure if they are accurate or there to boost the story. It was out of the gate a gripping tale with a story that made question just how much do we rely on the news for entirety of what we know about the outside world.

NightlyNews12

The Nightly News tells the tale of the terrorist organization known as the First Church of the Brotherhood of the voice. As its members begin their crusade against the evil world of the Network News. Their first act is killing a protester at random and then begin to pick off journalist as they arrive at the scene to report breaking news. This only in the few pages sets the rest of the title to be just as intense. We then meet our hero of the tale John Guyton, known as the Hand of the voice. Like the rest of the member of the group, John has been a victim of misinformation given out to world by an error the Nightly News had made. The world is easily swayed by what ever the news reports, who would give a second thought that the person shown to be a terrorist, a rapist, or a murderer might not even be at all. They may have a name similar or address close to the actual person and become exposed to the world for something they never did. This is what the story commits to its readers. A world run my the money and politcs that can afford to spin the story which ever way they deem fit.

The art is an incredible work of strange graphic design that will have you examine every page to find all the little things that Hickman has left for you to study. The character work is gritty, really feels like you get just their expressions which coupled with the dialogue is solid. I will def say that the art is style is an acquired taste. Saying that let be be the first to say it is a breath of fresh air and unlike most things out there. I love its combination of graphic design and sketchy pencils.¬†Aforementioned what really brightens this title is the little demographic charts Hickman sprinkles throughout every so many pages to give you insight on the situation. Funny part about the charts is that Hickman lets you know you can skip them if you feel like being a lazy read, which I know you’re not. The brilliant thing is you have no idea if these has serious truths to them unless you do some research for yourself, because lets be honest as you read this trade you don’t wanna feel like you’d take news at face value.

NightlyNews11

Overall this trade is money well spent. If you’ve enjoyed Hickman’s other bodies of work like East of West, Manhattan Projects, or his work at Marvel, this one is different. Its philosophical body count will have you second guessing where you get your information from and whether or not its worth the lives it may have ruined. Jonathan Hickman opened his career with a bang and its a trade you can’t afford to not pick up from your local comic store. I own it and love it, its one of those ones you can get your friends who don’t read comics to check out. Those artsy folks who think comics are for kids will maybe second guess their opinion when they check this one out.

Till next time, and if you have a trade you wanna recommend me to review let me know!
