Secret Avengers #1
Writer: Alex Kot
Artist: Michael Walsh
The creative team that brought the smashing first issue of the indie spy thriller Zero join together once again to take on Marvel’s spy Avengers! Stepping in where Nick Spencer’s title left off Kot really went out of his way to make this one feel completely different. One of the things this issue really got right was how each character felt as they were brought it. Spider-Woman hanging out with Black Widow getting back rubs the shooting range. Coulson going on a mission with Fury Jr(loved that they called on the fanboys raging about him being not their Nick Fury, so there’s two! Get over yourself! There’s five Spider-Men!) getting into a whole heap of trouble. Hawkeye really felt like Fraction’s Hawkguy which was a really nice touch! But the best pairing was Maria Hill being stuck working with M.O.D.O.C. That was just an awesome choice!
I really didn’t think I was gonna like this title as much as I did. I’m gonna throw the hand up for the foul on that one. I knew I had been really enjoying Kot’s Zero over at Image. I figured that was a spy story maybe this was gonna be cool? Well I loved it! Michael Walsh delivers a style similar to what David Aja produces without directly ripping him off. I’ve got say I like the choice of characters, M.O.D.O.C. and Spider-Woman were great calls to throw into this book! The censor faces were just awesome, especially the Spider-Woman face covering her boob. Of course the old Hawkeye mask covering his jiblits was funny and appropriate with the direction Kot is planning to take him.
I really wished they could have kept Mockingbird on this title. I think she’s a very underused character who fits this bill perfectly. I also felt like this title was all over the place. It was a lot of different things going on at once. Thankfully it all got pieced together in the end. I know it makes the lost sense for this title to be dealing with A.I.M. but man am I getting a little sick of seeing them in just about every title. I kinda miss H.Y.D.R.A. at this point. While I think I’m gonna like this title, I don’t think I like the name. Let’s be honest there’s no reason to call it Secret Avengers if everyone on the team is an Avenger pretty much all the time. Also it seems a bit excessive if all of them are also S.H.I.E.L.D. agent on the side. Call it Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or S.H.I.E.L.D. Ops, something.
This was a great opening to what is gonna be a cool title. Honestly this is what Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should be. Gonna plenty of action really hoping some political intrigue hits this title like a ton of bricks in them coming issues. I def think this is going one of those like it more than I think I normally would books feel like Alex Kot is one of those surprisingly good writers. The cast of characters are great even if you hate Coulson and Not the Nick Fury, Nick Fury Jr. Walsh’s style flourishes in this first issue. I’m gonna def get the next one. You should get this one!
4 Hawkguy censors out of 5!
