Review: New Avengers #16

New Avengers 16

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Riggs Morales

Well if you are similar to one of my colleagues and didn’t care for the last issue but love the title. Hickman gave you only a week to dwell on that last issue. That’s right a week later and we move in the. Ext exciting arc of Marvel’s Illumaniti. We find Black Panther scrolling through on the various other realities which had come to an end. Namor finds him and asks why waste his time on such trivialities? Panther has found a world which their heroes have no only stopped incursions before but are looking to take it a step further.

The Good
Jonathan Hickman seriously knows what he’s doing with this title. While I am one of the few who enjoyed the last issue. It really felt like he told that last arc just so that this one would make sense. The Great Society is absolutely genius! An otherworldly team who slightly resembles a certain League found in another comic brand. The Great Society is a group that has taken to stopping the incursions to the next level. Panther and Namor’s squabble at the beginning of the issue was just awesome. I love the two of them asking about how worlds are there with Panther still leader or how many where Namor is still king. Rigs Morales really provided the art this title has been needing for a while. Feels like the right choice after Deodato left. His character work really impressed me with the subtle designs of the The Great Society without blankly ripping off the League.

The Bad

Honestly I wanted everyone else beyond Namor and Panther. The Great Society was genius, but I wanted some non Cat Beast in this issue. I just wanted more to this issue. The ending lefty me lingering as to what was gonna happen next. How would the rest of the team react to what the Great Society had accomplished. Anyone else curious as to when the Real Blackbolt is gonna reappear? I’m missing some Midnight King right about now! Also why out Doctor Strange on the cover if he isn’t gonna appear in this issue?! I was all stoked and ready to see just what had been going on with the best part of the Bianchi issues! And oh nevermind he’ll be back in an issue or so?!

The Verdict

I loved this issue! It really set the tone once again to what Hickman is trying to achieve in this title. Much like his Fantastic Four, it will be a run unlike anything else. This remains my favorite title in Marvel right now. I can tell you already this arc is gonna be a phenom read you def don’t wanna miss out on. If you felt like dropping the title after the last couple issues this is the one that will put you back on the right track!

This one gets 4.5 not the Justice Leagues out of 5

Jules: Silver Surfer #1

While Dan Slott may be a terrible person he still has always had the ability to tell a good story with silly concepts. This doesn’t sound like it’s gonna be a silly title actually! Surfer traveling through space exploring moral dilemmas with a young woman. Honestly if Mike Allred is doing the art I will pick it up. I was a huge Madman/Atomics fan so believe me when I say I’ll buy anything the man draws. That all being said I’ve always been drawn to the Silver Surfer, goofy name aside he’s one of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s most interesting creations and totally underused/misused. I’m not say this gonna be the most gripping title but I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun.

Gaumer: Uncanny Avengers #18

Everything has been leading up to this! Planet X! The ride through this alternate-timeline mapped out by not-quite-superstar-writer Rick Remender has been nothing short of brilliant, and I simply cannot wait to see what happens next. The Apocalypse Twins’ plans seemed to have come off without much of a hitch, and I’m anxious to see what everyone who survived the mayhem has been up to, as well as how Kang is going to fix this mess! Surely, he’s not going to leave ALL those Avengers dead is he? IS HE?!

Taylor: Amazing X-Men #5

Jason Aaron’s and Ed McGuinness’ romp through the afterlife reaches its conclusion this week, bringing an end to their first story arch. This story has been a ton of fun so far, and I’m anxious to see if they end it on a high note. Also, we’ve been going through Nightcrawler withdrawals for quite a while now, and this book has our fix.

Christian: Batman: The Dark Knight #29

Three words: The Freakin’ Man-Bat! Three more words: Ethan van Sciver! Put them together and that’s 6 awesome words! This arc has been fun so far, and if the end lives up to the rest of the story this is going to be a great one. A new creative jumps on this book next issue, so look for some greatness from Hurwitz in wrapping this whole thing up.

New Avengers #16

That’s right one week later we get the immediate next step in what Jonathan Hickman is doing with my favorite Marvel title right now! Namor and Panther to make amends finally realizing just what lies ahead and the war now seemingly trivial! Can the Illumaniti really stop what has systematically destroyed other members of the multiverse, or are they just in over there heads like many of the alternate versions of them we’ve seen prior issues?! Unlike some of my counterparts I’m looking very forward to Hickman’s immediate response to the last issue.
