Jules: Hulk #2

The last issue left my jaw on the floor. Just where is Mark Waid going to take his next chapter of his stellar Hulk run. Suffice to say Mark Bagley’s art alone has me ready to purchase this issue. I’m just dying to know who shot Bruce Banner? And how do you handle a brain dead Banner with Hulk? A direction I would have never expected Waid to go. After Indestructible Hulk where everything seem to be going Hulks way, now a title where the status quo has been seriously changed! I’m ready for this one!

Taylor: Amazing Spider-Man #1

Peter Parker is back, and I am happy to see him. The Superior run had its merits, but the Marvel U always runs better when it has the original Web Head to serve as its heart and soul. And it’s coming to us from the creative team of Slott and Ramos, which has delivered strong work in the past. Can’t wait to see what they cook up.

Christian: Forever Evil: Batman vs. Bane #1

I could really easily choose Batman Eternal #3 this week, but that would be three weeks in a row of that comic, and although it deserves it, there are other Bats in Gotham, namely: Bane. The Arkham War story that sprang out of Forever Evil was really good, and now’s the time for Batman and Bane to settle the score, decide who is the hero Gotham needs, and who is the one it deserves.

Gaumer: All-New X-Men #26

The Trial of Jean Grey is over, and I’m thankful. It wasn’t a bad story, just not all that interesting. Since the other book that made up that event, Guardians of the Galaxy, had such a great return to normalcy in its last ish, I’m expecting the same thing from All-New X-Men, and it should be fun. The future Brotherhood from The Battle of the Atom return and that’s just fine by me.

Jesse: Deadly Class #4/ Black Science #6

Rick Remender is just on fire right now. Dropping Uncanny Avengers last week that was awesome. This week his two very eclectic indie titles drop and I’m picking them up. Deadly Class has been the gritting tale of a school of assassins in the 80s and has been absolutely a wonderful read. Wes Craig’s art has been unbelievably captivating. Black Science is reminiscent of a sort of pulpy lost in space if Quentin Tarentino directed it. Matteo Scalera depicts Aaron’s series of worlds that blow away the one before. This has certainly been a standout title since issue one. It has a feel that both Remender and Scalera are collaboration perfectly with what they want out of every page!

Review: Hulk #1

detail (22)

Hulk #1

Writer: Mark Waid

Artist: Mark Bagley

Mark Waid continues his run of the Hulk with a different title and one of my favorite artist of all time Mark Bagley! So the Indestructible Hulk series ends on a very poetic note in Bruce Banner being shot in the back of the Hulk while being completely complacent. Meaning he did not Hulk out as he usually does. The issue begins with a surgeon getting ready to perform brain surgery on the injured Bruce Banner. The surgeon a man who knew Bruce Banner in college. The surgeon a man who was not good and friendly to Bruce Banner. We see his life unfold around the events of Bruce becoming the Hulk as the Hulk first hits the scene. As the surgery get’s underway a lot things start to not feel right. S.H.I.E.L.D. nowhere to be seen. Things take a very quick turn!

The Good

I’m sorry but I will always gush about how wonderful Mark Bagley’s art. I’m an orginal New Warriors fan so I’ve always dug his art. Mark Waid’s Indestructible Hulk was a ton of fun for being a Hulk story where Banner was on top for once, this story looks to be quite the opposite and I really like that Waid went in that direction immediately with this issue. The tension was really built with the surgeon being a Joe Schmo who didn’t really have much to do with Banner just that he was a jerk to him in college. I like the way it makes you think does everyone who was unfortunate to Banner when he was younger blame themselves for what he’s become? I just think that was a great plot device. The end, made my jaw drop. I won’t spoil it because you should read this issue.

The Bad

As a long time Hulk reader I felt a little short changed by a brief history of the Hulk in this issue. I mean who doesn’t know the basics about Bruce Banner and the Hulk? I understand this was probably a device to attract new readers to a jumping on point in the title. However, I’m not a new reader and didn’t need it intermingled into my next chapter of Mark Waid’s run. This may all sound like nit picks, and honestly they are. This is a solid start to what looks like to be a very different Hulk title, which is exactly what I said long ago when Indestructible Hulk started probably on a very old low-fi Weekly Recs video.

The Verdict

I think this is gonna be a brilliant title. With a pairing like Waid and Bagley I expect good things out of this title. Mark Bagley’s art was beautiful  in this issue as it usually is. I’m a big fan of Mark Waid, his work on the previous Hulk title and with Daredevil have been nothing short of brilliant. This is a great jumping on point for anyone interested into picking up a Hulk title. Its def one of those anyone who is simply a fan and is looking to starrt collecting a title, this is the Hulk you can grab.

This one get’s 3 bullets in Banner’s head out of 5

Jules: Inhuman #1

Charles Soule is running a hot hand in a dice game and I’m really looking forward to his next roll. In the wake of Inhumanity which seems almost forgotten now here stands the old and new Inhumans after the fall of Attilan. All that aside Joe Madureira’s art is solid and it’s gonna rad for this title!

Gaumer: Detective Comics #30

This is the one I’ve been waiting for! The creative team that made The Flash one of my favorite monthly titles is back, on a Batman book, and I couldn’t be happier about it. I have no idea what the story is going to be about, and I don’t really care. I’m getting this for simple reason: Mind-blowing art! That’s what gave The Flash so much appeal for so many months, and I’m hoping beyond hope that the creative team follows through on this title. It’s on the top of my stack this week.

Ultimate Spider-Man #200

Brian Michael Bendis hits a milestone with this issue, having been the only writer on this title since it first launched in the late 90s. Alongside side just about every artist who has graced the title! This is a really step forward in the continuation of the Ultimate legacy as the current Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales stands with the friends and family of the fallen Peter Parker as they take a serious look back at the life of the first Ultimate Spider-Man. Something I can’t wait to get my hands on.
