It is kind of hard to believe but April is already here and that means DC’s big universe shattering event Convergence is upon us. I know many comic fans, myself included, are very skeptical about this event and for good reason. Does DC really need another Crisis style event so soon after establishing the New 52? I can’t remember the last time I actually read anything from Dan Jurgens that was actually good. Why is a total newcomer like Jeff King writing a major event like this? All of these things really don’t give many readers much confidence going in to this event. Never fear, though. I hashed out the $4.99 this week so I will give you the low down on whether or not this is actually worth your time or whether you should save some money for two months.

Jules: Silver Surfer #1

While Dan Slott may be a terrible person he still has always had the ability to tell a good story with silly concepts. This doesn’t sound like it’s gonna be a silly title actually! Surfer traveling through space exploring moral dilemmas with a young woman. Honestly if Mike Allred is doing the art I will pick it up. I was a huge Madman/Atomics fan so believe me when I say I’ll buy anything the man draws. That all being said I’ve always been drawn to the Silver Surfer, goofy name aside he’s one of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s most interesting creations and totally underused/misused. I’m not say this gonna be the most gripping title but I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun.

Gaumer: Uncanny Avengers #18

Everything has been leading up to this! Planet X! The ride through this alternate-timeline mapped out by not-quite-superstar-writer Rick Remender has been nothing short of brilliant, and I simply cannot wait to see what happens next. The Apocalypse Twins’ plans seemed to have come off without much of a hitch, and I’m anxious to see what everyone who survived the mayhem has been up to, as well as how Kang is going to fix this mess! Surely, he’s not going to leave ALL those Avengers dead is he? IS HE?!

Taylor: Amazing X-Men #5

Jason Aaron’s and Ed McGuinness’ romp through the afterlife reaches its conclusion this week, bringing an end to their first story arch. This story has been a ton of fun so far, and I’m anxious to see if they end it on a high note. Also, we’ve been going through Nightcrawler withdrawals for quite a while now, and this book has our fix.

Christian: Batman: The Dark Knight #29

Three words: The Freakin’ Man-Bat! Three more words: Ethan van Sciver! Put them together and that’s 6 awesome words! This arc has been fun so far, and if the end lives up to the rest of the story this is going to be a great one. A new creative jumps on this book next issue, so look for some greatness from Hurwitz in wrapping this whole thing up.

New Avengers #16

That’s right one week later we get the immediate next step in what Jonathan Hickman is doing with my favorite Marvel title right now! Namor and Panther to make amends finally realizing just what lies ahead and the war now seemingly trivial! Can the Illumaniti really stop what has systematically destroyed other members of the multiverse, or are they just in over there heads like many of the alternate versions of them we’ve seen prior issues?! Unlike some of my counterparts I’m looking very forward to Hickman’s immediate response to the last issue.
