Top o’ the Lot: Tops o’ the Lot of 2014

Howdy and welcome to the first installment of the Top o’ the Lot for 2015! This one is something of a retrospective, as I’ll be looking back on the 2014’s Top o’ the Lot and choosing those ones I thought were the best entries. You might say this is the Top o’ the Lot’s very own Top o’ the Lot from 2014. When Gaumer asked me to write this, his reasoning was pretty straight-forward. I had not written one in 2014, meaning that I could remain unbiased in selecting the best picks.

All the Top o’ the Lots are fun reads, there’s a little something for everyone. Some are full of knowledge that might come in handy during trivia night. While others might invoke a nostalgic memory from childhood. Then there are the ones that spark debates and discussions over. Conversations resulting from those can be heated at times, but in the end it’s the time you spend talking to your friends over the things you are passionate about that really matters. You’ll never know what you’re going to find. Continue reading Top o’ the Lot: Tops o’ the Lot of 2014

Image Comics 2014: The Year in New Titles; Part 2

The first issue of a comic book series is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a blank slate. An opportunity to see something fresh and new. On the other hand, though, it’s an investment that may not pay off. Despite previews, reviews, and buzz surrounding a book, the proof is in the pudding, and you have to buy the book to know for sure. Marvel and DC are notorious for dropping issue #1’s that are FINO’s; Firsts In Name Only. There’s a title change, or a change to a creative team lineup, but nothing really new and refreshing. So it is with the Big 2 publishers and their Image Logoconstricting universes. Persistent universes come with rules. Image Comics, however, is not beholden to these rules.

Every month of 2014 Image Comics offered readers something completely new and different. And these weren’t just your run-of-the-mill issue #1’s, these are books by big names in the industry, books with staying power, and some great comic books. Read the first half of the year in new Image Comics that was 2014 here. Continue reading Image Comics 2014: The Year in New Titles; Part 2

Outright Geekery continues its rundown of the year that was 2014, and I’m sticking with comic books again, but this time it’s my favorite artists of the year. Man, there were so many pretty pictures, so much great art, this year that it was nigh impossible to come up with a short list. So, I made a long list featuring my favorite artists of the whole year, and instead of some long, drawn-out critique of how awesome these folks are at drawing lines on paper, here’s the list and some of their best stuff from the year. I implore you to click the images to make them larger, and behold the most awesome art of the entire year. Continue reading Gaumer’s Top Comic Book Artists of 2014

Gaumer’s Top 5 Comic Book Single Issues of 2014

The End Draws Nigh…the end of 2014, that is. And what a great year is was for comics! The Outright Geekery crew is running down the year that was 2014 with a series of articles spotlighting the highs and lows that marked the twelvemonth, and I’d be lacking in my duties if I didn’t chime in with my own list of top comics. There’s a lot of way I could have gone with this; Best Titles, Best Arcs, Even a list of Best Characters and the issues that made them that way; but I decided to highlight my favorite single issues of the year, and it was no small task. There were so many great issues this year that it was difficult to whittle it down to just 5…so I picked 6.

Events are the bread and butter of the comic book industry, and all of the big publishers and titles get in on the hype and extra monthly books that go with. 2014 had some great events from not only the usual suspects DC and Marvel, but also some smaller presses that pushed the envelope to get some buzz and find some success.
