There’s a new terror in the universe as the body-snatching Psions are introduced to The New 52! In space you can – and will – hear a New Guardian scream!

A Guardian and an entire world are abducted. Kyle Rayner, the all-powerful White Lantern, is missing in action after his fight with Mogo’s evil brother. On top of this, Carol Ferris is left to watch after the rest of the Guardians who prove to be just as bad at making decisions as their evil predecessors, albeit for different reasons. Things just aren’t looking up for everyone.

The Good

For the most part, this book has greatly benefited under the writing of Justin Jordan. He has infused into the book a great sense of moral ambiguity and difficult decision making in recent story lines that remind me a lot of episodes of Star Trek. These stories don’t always work, but its nice to see a DC book tackle difficult questions instead just being about beating up the bad guy. What is especially great about this issue is that it displays how flawed the new guardians are. Whereas before, the old guardians made decisions purely based on logic, these guardians also use emotion. In fact, they are blinded by emotion the entire issue in their desperate quest to find their missing friend. Its just refreshing and different. Plus, Brad Walkers art inside the Psion Spaceship is just amazing. That is one messed up alien, folks.

The Bad

I still don’t know how I feel about Carol Ferris falling head over heels for Kyle. It just doesn’t feel right and Kyle’s inability to even recognize it is starting to get annoying. On top of that, Kyle is almost not in this issue at all. I know the book is called New Guardians, but this is Kyle’s book and not having him in it this month is a real bummer. The only real complaint I have on the art is that Carol’s face sometimes just looks plain weird. Walker can draw some pretty aliens, but got the human female face wrong. Its only in a few panels, though, so not a big deal.

The Verdict

Overall, not a bad book. Its missing Kyle which is a bummer and Carol constantly nagging the Guardians can get a little annoying, but overall this was a solid issue that set up what is hopefully an amazing issue 33. If you are a Lantern fan, then pick this one up.
