From time to time Outright Geekery brings you a slanted and biased opinion on some trivially specific topic of geekery. We call it Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot.
I’m sure by now some form of social media has informed you, or if you are like me and just read it the old fashion way, you know the Ultimate Marvel Universe has come to an end by way of Secret Wars #1 couple of weeks. Well this week to honor those we lost in the beginning of this event, we here at Outright Geekery are here to countdown the best events of Ultimate Marvel!
Honorable Mention: Ultimate War
In its early stages, Ultimate Marvel was a breath of fresh air and a more relevant story for young new readers. Ultimate War was one of the first steps in making the Ultimate Universe more like its counterpart; more connected. Ultimate War pinned the Ultimates and the Ultimate X-Men against one another. The whole world seemingly watched Magento’s death at the hands of his former colleague Charles Xavier. However, Beast of the X-Men has discovered the Professor is actually keeping Magneto alive and is hiding him. Beast accidentally leaks the info to everyone and the Ultimates must step in to stop Magneto. It was a great way to push the 1610 universe together as they found less and less reasons to trust one another. Ultimate War was the first and one of the best ways to explain the differences between the 616 Marvel Universe and the Ultimate. Ultimate War was exploring a world of heroes who could not trust each other.
5. Ultimate Power
Ever expanding new takes on what the 616 had, Ultimate Power introduce the Ultimate Universe’s Squadron Supreme and gave us a new way of looking at Ultimate Reed Richards. Apparently after their brush with their own Negative Zone, Ultimate Reeds tries to find life in other dimensions and sadly become the destroyer of worlds. Seeking retribution for what had been done, a very different Squadron Supreme comes hunting for Reed, and all that stands in their way is the Ultimates. This story rules! Ultimate Universe or not its a really cool Squadron Supreme and Reed Richards story. For me this was one of those stories they did to really distance the Ultimate from the regular Marvel Universe and it does a great job of standing on it’s own two legs.
After the events in Age of Ultron (616 comic event, not the movie) there was a rupture in space-time and the Galactus of the Marvel Universe ended up in the Ultimate Universe. There he merged with Gah Lak Tus, his Ultimate counterpart, to achieve what neither had been able to pull off on their own: Destroy Earth. What’s left of the Ultimate Universe’s heroes gather to prepare for the end and do what they can to stop the impending end. Its shows us the more vulnerable side of the Ultimate Universe in its lacking of real heroes. This event is a great step into the intensely gripping world the Ultimate Universe had become, a world where heroes were more skeptical than the readers.
3. Ultimate Extinction
Gah Lak Tus, a hive minded swarm with the sole purpose of devouring worlds. Think if Galactus was more a force of nature rather then a being. This wonderful take on a story many of us Marvel fans are familiar with is just fun. Nick Fury assemblies Reed Richards and Charles Xavier to prepare for the coming swarm. Heralds which help to prepare the Earth for the swarm begin going toe to toe with the heroes of the Ultimate Universe and they see the terror the swarm will bring. Playing up the more modern sci-fi epic this event was a great way to enter the cosmos of another marvel universe. Seeing characters we knew once before as something else. Ultimate Extinction is a ton of fun in a new way to read one of the great stories of the Marvel Universe.
2. Ultimate Six
This story would probably end not only on this list but also on one of my favorite Spider-Man stories of all time. Ultimate Spider-man has been plagued by an ever changing Green Goblin who’s character evolutions begin to be leaving psychological damage on Peter Parker. Henry Pym is trying to rehabilitate many of the super powered criminally insane. Among them is the infamous Norman Osbourne, who had bide his time and is now ready to strike. Norman escapes prison and breaks out quite a few member of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery. S.H.I.E.LD. scrambles the Ultimates in preparation that the escapees will hunt down Spider-Man and Harry Osbourne. Norman’s true motive is to have Peter Join him. A great spin on the epic war that has always been between a Green Goblin and Spider-Man.
1. Ultimate Fallout
This event sums up the Ultimate Universe for me, and what the Ultimate Universe could do well where most ongoing imprints fail. The feeling of a death being a permanent part of the story. Characters felt and dealt with loss in their own way. The cornerstone of the Ultimate Universe always has been and always will be Ultimate Spider-Man, the title that started it all. Well, when 1610 Peter Parker lost his life fighting the Green Goblin and protecting Captain America the entire Ultimate Universe is shaken up. The event shakes the very foundation of the Ultimate Universe. It is a pounding emotional roller-coaster that anyone reading the Ultimate Universe can appreciate as a really good story told from all perspectives.
