Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: May 6th, 2015

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Taylor: Secret Wars #1

After a VERY drawn out build up, it is finally time to start the show. If this was only a chance to gawk at Esad Ribic’s artwork, that would already be enough reason for me to be excited, but I’m also stoked to see Hickman’s next big chapter to his epic Avengers run. After waiting for so long, how could I pick anything else?

SECRET WARS #1 (OF 8)

MARVEL COMICS
(Writer) Jonathan Hickman (Artist) Esad Ribic (Cover) Alex Ross

David: Kanan Last Padawan #2

The last issue ended on a cliffhanger that I have to see what happens in issue #2.  How does Caleb Dume survive Order 66? Writer Greg Weisman has made this series feel like it belongs as part of  the Star Wars Rebels universe. Kanan Last Padawan will tide me over until season 2 of Rebels drops in June.

Gaumer: Descender #3

Besides the VERY popular Secret Wars #1 and a couple of other books, there’s really not much on my pull-list this week. One book that’s on that list, however, is Descender #3. Jeff Lemire is doing a great job of making the lead character endearing, and although I wish there was a bit more world-building going on, this has turned into a wonderful, must-read series in only a couple of issues.

DESCENDER #3

Item Code: MAR150561

Adam: Ant-Man #5

Nick Spencer is just knocking this book out of the park! He is bringing the same lovable loser vibe to this title that he brought to Superior Foes and it really works well. I’m really hoping this iteration of the character lasts after Secret Wars because it is just a blast to read.

ANT-MAN #5
Publisher: MARVEL COMICS
(Writer) Nick Spencer (Artist) Ramon Rosanas (Cover) Mark Brooks
• The explosive first arc finale! There aren’t actually any explosions – but there IS a big showdown with our poorly lit villain, and plenty of heartbreak to go around.
•  Nothing will be the same again! Except you’re still aging. That’s not going anywhere.
Item Code: MAR150719
In Shops: 5/6/2015
SRP: $3.99

Jules: Dead Drop #1

Well since Secret Wars is taken, Dead Drop #1  As a fan of Alex Kot’s recent work and a minor fan of the current Valiant Universe I can say I’m def gonna pick Dead Drop #1 a shot, the preview looks cool, I really like Adam Gorham’s art, if anything the issue will be spectacular to look at. But know Kot its gonna have a story to grip me and keep me on through the rest of the mini series.
