Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: April 1st, 2015

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Taylor: Avengers #43

Admittedly, this is going to be a slow week for me, but I am looking forward to Avengers #43. To echo Adam’s sentiments, this is a story that has had plenty of cool moments, but I’m definitely ready for it to end.

David: Kanan Last Padawan #1

I’m a big fan of the Star Wars Rebels television show. This week, Marvel’s releasing their first comic series based on Rebels featuring Kanan, the leader of our merry band. Kanan’s Jedi past will be revealed, as this series take us back to the Clone Wars, how he survived Order 66 and what he lost in the process. Events hinted at in Rebels are finally going to be told!

(Writer) Greg Weisman (Artist) Pepe Larraz (Cover) Mark Brooks
• Kanan Jarrus–in STAR WARS REBELS, he’s a cocky, sarcastic renegade fighting against the Galactic Empire alongside the rag-tag crew of the Ghost…but years before, at the height of the Clone Wars, he was known as Caleb Dume, Jedi Padawan under the instruction of Jedi Master Depa Billaba. Neither master nor apprentice ever suspected that the Clone Troopers they commanded would turn on them upon the issuing of Order 66-the order to execute all Jedi. How did Caleb Dume survive? How did he learn to survive on his own? And how did he become the man we know as Kanan Jarrus? Writer Greg Weisman (writer/executive producer on STAR WARS REBELS, SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN) and artist Pepe Larraz (DEADPOOL VS. X-FORCE, THOR, INHUMAN) bring us a tale bridging the years between the Clone Wars and Rebels!

Gaumer: Southern Bastards #8

I don’t think you necessarily have to be from the south to enjoy this book, but you can bet your biscuit it helps. The southern fried masterpiece  that is Southern Bastard has it all: Football, Bar-B-Q, and over-the-top violence. I just wish the characters weren’t so damned familiar…

(Writer) Jason Aaron (Artist/Cover) Jason Latour
The final chapter in the story of how the worst football player in Craw County rose to become “Coach Boss,” and the terrible bloody price he had to pay along the way.
Don’t miss the chilling conclusion of “Gridiron,” the second arc in the seminal southern crime series.

Adam: Batman Eternal #52, Future’s End #48, and Earth 2: World’s End #26

It has been a long ride with DC’s weekly titles and finally all three of them come to an end this week. Sure, they had varied degrees of quality, but each book is going out with a bang and looking to change the DC universe as we know it. I am particularly interested in Future’s End to see how it will tie into Convergence #0 which also comes out this week.

Jules: Black Science #13

Every Issue of this title has had me hooked. Dire is what Remender does best, and this book is has been a heart pounding example of what he does best! Paired with the brilliant Matteo Scalera this title has been a tour de strange for scifi books. Its got more betrayal than any episode of Game of Thrones I’ve seen.

(Writer) Rick Remender (Artist/Cover) Matteo Scalera
