Top o’ the Lot: Transformers Combiners

From time to time Outright Geekery brings you a slanted and biased opinion on some trivially specific topic of geekery. We call it Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot.

Transformers #39Today is the day! IDW’s long-awaited Transformers Comics crossover event, Combiner Wars, begins today in Transformers #39. Now, I’ve been a fan of The Transformers since the very beginning of the phenomenon way back in the 1980s, and it’s just great that the legacy of the Autobots and the Decepticons is still being written. IDW’s latest Transformers event puts Combiners in the limelight and will crossover between Transformers proper and a brand new Windblade series. If you’re like me and have been a fan of this franchise for decades you already know what a Combiner is, but, for those robot newbies out there, allow me to explain. All Transformers change from robots to another form, usually a vehicle (but sometimes a tape deck) and back. But, some Transformers can merge together to form even larger robots known as Combiners. While there are 2, 3, and more robot Combiner Teams throughout Transformers, this week’s Top o’ the Lot is dealing with only those teams that include 5 or more robots, because those are the ones that will be the main focal point of IDW’s event. So, without further ado, we transform, tsche-chu-chu-che-tsche, and roll out, in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: Transformers Combiners.

Honorable Mention: Predaking

Predaking
Predaking versus Superion AND Menasor!

Predaking is unique among combiners in only one singular detail. While most Combiner Teams gestalt form is an insane or stupid mishmash of the individual robots that make up the larger robot, Predaking is united by the shared Predacon love for the hunt. This makes Predaking a dangerous asset for the Decepticons, and he’s just a beast (see what I did there?) He is made up of a bunch of animals, however, and I only like my Transformers to be animals in two cases: When they are cassette tapes or in Beast Wars. Predaking gets an Honorable Mention because he’s a badass, but I doubt we’ll see him make an appearance in Combiner Wars.

5. Computron

Combiner Team Name: Technobots
Affiliation: Autobots

In the G1 Animated Series the Technobots were created by the Dinobot Grimlock who was accidentally made temporarily super-intelligent. It worked out really well because the Technobots are awesome Transformers, but their gestalt form Computron can be a bit of a brainiac. While the combining process often times dulls the wits of the big robot, Computron is by far one of the smartest bots out there, but that’s also his biggest downfall. Before committing to any action in battle, Computron must first tediously weigh every decision. He always makes the right choice, but more often than not it’s after he’s gotten his butt kicked. Computron

 4. Defensor

Combiner Team Name: Protectobots
Affiliation: Autobots
Team Members:

Charged with protecting humans, the Protectobots are based on Earth in their own Headquarters away from the rest of Autobot HQ, and it’s for a good reason. Although the Protectobots gestalt form, Defensor, is by far the most well-adjusted of all the Combiners, his feelings toward humans are intense. He relates more to Earthers than he does his own Cybertronian kind, which doesn’t pan out too well as humans tend to be close-minded and fearful of things that are different. And it doesn’t get much different than a giant alien robot. I want to see Defensor show up in Combiner Wars, but I’m not counting on it. The human rescue vehicle forms work well with the backstory, but not in this event. Defensor

3. Menasor

Combiner Team Name: Stunticons
Affiliation: Decepticons

This one time, Megatron got jealous of the Autobots’ vehicle modes, and decided to build his own team of Decepticon cars. I’d be upset too if I could only change into a gun. But Megatron didn’t think things through all the way, because the Stunticons are all psychotic maniacs. So, when they form to become Menasor, that psychosis increases exponentially. Menasor is an angry, hate-filled powerhouse, but he has some trouble directing and controlling all that anger and hatred, making him an unpredictable combatant. Bad for the Autobots; Also bad for the Decepticons; But great for us readers!Menasor

2. Superion

Combiner Team Name: Aerialbots
Affiliation: Autobots
Team Members:

The Ying to Menasor’s Yang, the Aerialbots were created as a direct response to Megatron building the Stunticons. I mean, it makes sense: The air-centric Decepticons get a ground team; the ground-centric Autobots get an air team. But it became a lot more than that once the true nature of both of these gestalt teams became known, and none was as awesome as Superion. While other Combiners attempt to unite their gestalt forms by taking a part of each individual bot to build the whole, Superion blocks out everything from each of the single bots that make him up, and focuses entirely on the goal: Destroying Decepticons! Menasor and Superion will both be in IDW’s event, so look for them, but there’s no way you’ll miss the bot at the very Top o’ this Lot.Superion

1. Devastator

Combiner Team Name: Constructicons
Affiliation: Decepticons

The First, the Best, and STILL the undisputed King of the Combiners, Devastator was a gestalt/combiner before there was even a name for the form. Easily one of the most powerful Transformers ever created, Devastator is, unfortunately, mentally unstable to say the very least. On a bit of a down note, the Constructicons were originally good guys, builders of the Great Crystal City of Cybertron, and best friends to Autobot Omega Supreme, but were turned evil by Megatron and his Robo-Smasher. Sad, but it made for some great fights between Devastator and Omega Supreme that I wouldn’t trade for anything! Devastator will be a major part of the entire Combiner Wars event, so do not miss it!Devastator
