Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: March 4th, 2015

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Taylor: Princess Leia #1

So far, Marvel’s much hyped Star Wars books have been delivering some impressive quality, with the main Star Wars and Darth Vader both getting off to great starts. Can Mark Waid and Terry Dodson make it 3 for 3 this week with Princess Leia #1? I sure hope so, because this will be great opportunity for one of sci-fi’s greatest heroines to get some much deserved lime-light for a change. Princess Leia #1PRINCESS LEIA #1
(Writer) Mark Waid (Artist/Cover) Terry Dodson
• When Princess Leia Organa was captured by the Empire as a Rebel spy, she never betrayed her convictions, even in the face of the complete destruction of her home world, Alderaan. When her rescue came, she grabbed a blaster and joined the fight, escaping back to the Rebel Alliance and helping strike the biggest blow against the Empire-the destruction of the Death Star. But in the aftermath of that victory, the question remains…what is a princess without a world?
•  Writer Mark Waid (Daredevil, S.H.I.E.L.D.) and artist Terry Dodson (Avengers & X-Men: Axis, Uncanny X-Men) bring us a story of Leia’s quest to help her people and find her place in the galaxy.

David: Rat Queens #9

The Rat Queens are back! Starting with issue #9, Stjepan Sejic takes over artist duties for the series. The story picks up right where it left off, with Palisade is under siege by the many-tentacled gods that Dee’s family worship. Now it’s up to the Rat Queens and friends to stop it. It may be the end of the world, but it’s just another day in Palisade.   Rat Queens #9RAT QUEENS #9
(Writer) Kurtis J. Wiebe (Artist) Stjepan Sejic (Cover) Jenny Frison
Life in Palisade is a goblet of toasty sweet mulled wine. But this issue is the skull-pounding headache the next morning when all you’re left with is the consequences. And they are life-changing, awful ones at that.
Special cover by superstar artist JENNY FRISON!

SRP: $3.50

Gaumer: All-New Hawkeye #1

With two new series debuting this week there was no way writer Jeff Lemire wasn’t going to be part of my pick this week, but is it the Image Comics sci-fi or the Marvel Comics angsty archer? After giving it some thought, I’m going with All-New Hawkeye. Great creative team; great character; great direction judging by the previews. I’m hoping the hype doesn’t miss the bullseye, and I can’t wait to find out. All-New Hawkeye #1ALL NEW HAWKEYE #1
(Writer) Jeff Lemire (Artist/Cover) Ramon K. Perez
• Hawkeye returns in an all-new series featuring superstar writer Jeff Lemire in his Marvel debut and Eisner Award-winning artist Ramon Perez, as they bring you a fresh new look into the life of everyone’s favorite Avenger. With Kate Bishop, his trusted ward and protégé back at his side (not titles she would use), Team Hawkeye is thrown into an all new adventure spanning two generations of avenging archers. Past and present lives collide as Kate and Clint face a threat that will challenge everything they know about what it means to be Hawkeye.
•  But no one puts Hawkeye in a corner.
•  Hawkeye and Hawkeye take aim March 2015!

Adam: Swamp Thing #40

All good things must come to an end and so it is with Swamp Thing this week. Sure, we will get a Convergence tie-in for Swamp Thing, but the main story by Charles Soule comes to an end here in this extra-sized issue. I fully expect this issue to be just as great as every other issue of this run.Swamp Thing #40SWAMP THING #40
