Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: January 28th, 2015

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Taylor: Thor #4

In this issue, we have the fated first confrontation between Thor Odinson and the new Goddess of Thunder. I could talk about how beautiful the artwork in this book has been, about the high quality of the writing, or about the drama and intrigue that this meeting of characters promises to bring. But honestly, I just really, REALLY want to see these two fight, and that’s the only reason I really need.Thor #4THOR #4
(WRITER) Jason Aaron (ARTIST/COVER) Russell Dauterman
• The Odinson is back. And he clearly doesn’t like that someone else is holding his hammer. You know what that means, right?

David: Gotham Academy #4

The kids are on the trail of the Ghost of Gotham Academy! This series has been a delight to read and accompanied by wonderful artwork. The team of Cloonan, Fletcher and Kerschl have really done a terrific job making Gotham Academy such a fun comic. The series is picking up traction and I have been looking forward to what’s to come.

Gaumer: The Dying and the Dead #1

Another week, another #1 from Image Comics. Sure, there’s a lot of hype surrounding Secret Wars and Marvel Comics as a whole, and most of that is the fault of one man: Jonathan Hickman. Ignoring all the hype, however, we’re still left with one concrete fact: That boy can write some comics! I’ve been a Hickman fan since the first issue of his The Nightly News, and I have yet to be disappointed in ANY book Hickman has given us, so I’m thrilled to have yet another new series from the celebrated writer. While I’m not certain that this will be better than Secret Wars, I’m sure it’s going to be great, and I can’t wait to read it.comics-the-dying-and-the-deadDYING AND THE DEAD #1
(WRITER) Jonathan Hickman (ARTIST/COVER) Ryan Bodenheim
A murder at a wedding reveals a fifty year-old secret. At great cost, a man with a dying wife is given the opportunity to save her. A lost tribe is reborn in another time. Seemingly disparate events that force relics from the Greatest Generation to come together for one last hurrah.

Brought to you by award-winning writer JONATHAN HICKMAN and fan-favorite artist RYAN BODENHEIM, THE DYING AND THE DEAD is high adventure meets end-of-life care.

It’s Indiana Jones for Old People. There are no fedoras, only bedpans.
Item Code: NOV140534
In Shops: 1/28/2015
SRP: $4.50

Adam: Uncanny Avengers #1

Yeah, Axis was a terrible load of crap, but Remender’s last volume of Uncanny Avengers was epic and amazing so I still have high hopes that this new volume will be just as great.Uncanny_Avengers_1_CoverUNCANNY AVENGERS #1
(WRITER) Rick Remender (ARTIST/COVER) Daniel Acuña
•  From the ashes of AXIS an all-new, all different Avengers assemble!
•  The tragedy at the end of AXIS has left the Uncanny Avengers vulnerable, and someone is taking advantage of it.
•  One of the Avengers oldest foes returns with a terrible secret that will, all hyperbole aside, shatter the lives of two members of the squad.
•  What is Counter-Earth? What terrible secrets does it house?
