It’s Star Wars Week! This is the week that Star Wars #1 from Marvel Comics hits store shelves, and all of us at Outright Geekery couldn’t be more excited. To celebrate Star Wars coming home to Marvel, we’re dedicating an entire week to Star Wars related stuff of all kinds, and this week’s scheduled Top o’ the Lot is no different.
What’s that? You’re not sure if you’re even going to buy Star Wars #1! Well, that would be a huge mistake, because I’m here to tell you that this is going to be an amazing comic book and the start to a historical series. Plus, it’s freakin’ Star Wars! But maybe you need a bit more convincing. So, without further ado, we restate the obvious, love this creative team, and look to the future, with Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: Reasons to Buy Star Wars #1.
Honorable Mention) It’s Star Wars!
Many people do not require another reason, but it’s kind of an important one, yet quite evident. Star Wars is just cool! Even the not-as-good prequel trilogy gave is some great stuff, like Clone Wars. This franchise just holds a special place in the hearts of so many geeks, and this is THE only place to get your fix of those beloved characters introduced in the films. Even if you’re one of the island castaways that’s never really gotten into Star Wars, this is THE perfect opportunity to see what all the fuss is about. Or, you know, you could go watch those movies everyone’s been talking about.
5) Upcoming Series
Although I’m not sure that being able to read more comics qualifies as a reason to read Star Wars it’s Top o’ the Lot, and I’m biased. Besides this single series coming out in January, two more comic books set in the Star Wars Universe will be out in the coming months, and Star Wars itself may be required reading to fully enjoy those series. And, man, those series are going to be great. Darth Vader #1 by superstar writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca is due out in February, and the limited series Princess Leia by legend Mark Waid and artist Terry Dodson come out in March. And who knows where else this will go from here? With Star Wars #1 being a million copy seller, Marvel is bound to take full advantage of that success, and it could mean even more series based on the property. I know I’d buy them!
4) Marvel Comics
Like I said before, it’s been a long time since Marvel Comics has had the Star Wars license, and they are going to put everything they have into these books. Marvel Comics is THE best selling comic book publisher in the world today, with licenses and characters that don’t just dominate the shelves of comic book shops, but dominate movie box offices, TV, video games, you name it! Marvel has a monster of a promotional team, their profile had never been higher, and they attract the best and brightest creative teams in the entire industry. Marvel also has exclusive writers and artists with styles and reputations that demand working within this beloved universe, and the best place to start this entire journey is right here, right now, with Star Wars #1.
3) The Artist
John Cassaday is a modern day legend. He’s a multiple Eisner Award winning artist, penciling such titles as Astonishing X-Men and Planetary, and his style is simply perfect for Star Wars. Here’s the proof!
2) The Writer
Writer Jason Aaron has never been hotter. His Image Comics book Southern Bastards has been a critical and audience success, while his work on Thor for the past few years has not only been some of the best stuff ever written on the character, he’s made history by creating a hotly talked about and successful female version of the character. Everything I’ve read from Jason Aaron has been stellar, and he’s definitely got the skill to write Star Wars, but also the attention to detail and respect to the franchise the justice it deserves. Trust me when I say, this beloved franchise is in good hands.
1) The Universe
I’ll say it again: It’s Star Wars! But 2015 isn’t just the Year of Star Wars because a new comic book is dropping. Come December we’ll be seeing the first new Star Wars movie in years. Good or bad, it’s going to be a huge film. But everything that will be going on in those new films starts with these comics. The Expanded Universe is gone, and all we have until December are these books to build this universe we all know and love. I also foresee that hints to the upcoming films will be seeded throughout the comic books, and these books will be an integral part to Disney’s entire Star Wars plan. It’s going to be a great year!
