Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: January 14th, 2015

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Taylor: Captain Marvel #11

Month in and month out, this book has been a treat to read, with Kelly Sue DeConnick packing each issue to the brim with fun. With Carol back on Earth for a few issues, we’ve got a good chance to catch up with some old friends that have been mostly absent since the relaunch. Should be a good time.

and Star Wars #1

It’s a good week to be a nerd! Star Wars #1 is finally upon us, giving us the type of A-List creative team we’ve always dreamed of to guide Luke, Han, and Leia against the Empire! Any book which pairs Jason Aaron with John Cassaday is already a must buy, and having it be about Star Wars just puts it over the top. I can’t wait!

But the Empire’s not toppled yet! Join Luke along with Princess Leia, smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca, droids C-3PO and R2-D2 and the rest of the Rebel Alliance as they strike out for freedom against the evil forces of Darth Vader and his master, the Emperor. Written by Jason Aaron (Original Sin, Thor: God of Thunder) and with art by John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men, Uncanny Avengers), this is the Star Wars saga as only Marvel Comics could make it!

David: Copperhead #5

It’s the completion of the first story-arc for Copperhead. The dots are starting to connect as Sheriff Bronson closes in on the suspect of the Sewell family murder. Can Clara set aside her distrust of Arties to get the answers. Copperhead has quickly become my new favorite sci-fi series. Just the right mix of Firefly and Bravestarr. This series has been a great read, I recommend you give it a look.

also Star Wars #1

Long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… Okay, maybe it was just Louisiana in the early 1980’s, but that’s beside the point. When I was a kid, some of my earliest comics were Marvel Star Wars. This was long before Dark Horse Comics was publishing any Star Wars comics, or anything for that matter. So Marvel’s new Star Wars series is something of a homecoming for me. I’m very curious to see what Marvel plans to do with Star Wars.

Gaumer: Lazarus #14

I love, love, love, love this book! It was easily my favorite book of last year, issue #13 was easily my favorite of the series so far, and I can’t wait to read this new ish. I’m hoping 2015 is just as good as 2014 for Lazarus, and it all begins here, so I’ll be reading this first thing Wednesday.

Oh, and Star Wars #1

In July of 1977 two significant events in the history of comic books occurred. First, in NYC, U.S.A., Marvel Comics published the first issue of Star Wars, the epic comic that started one of the most beloved fan franchises of all time. Second, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Gaumer’s bouncing baby boy was born, the beginning a series of events that would ultimately lead to you reading this article. There’s no way I can’t be excited about this comic book finally coming out, and I’ll actually be reading this book Tuesday night at the launch party. All I can is, Welcome Home!

Adam: Avengers #34.2

I actually really enjoyed Avengers #34.1. I thought it was a very interesting one and done spotlight on Hyperion that made me legitimately care about the character, so I hope the same thing happens here with Starbrand. We are almost done with Hickman’s Avengers epic and I still really can’t think of a reason why I should care about this guy. I’m ready for that to change this week.
