Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: October 8th, 2014

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Taylor: Amazing Spider-Man #7

In an industry where team-up books aren’t exactly rare, it takes a pretty special meeting of heros to stand out in the crowd. This week, though, we have just such a book, as ASM #7 will showcase the first ever meeting between my favorite super hero, Spider-Man, and my favorite new character, Ms Marvel. These characters have the potential for some great chemistry, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how Dan Slott handles Kamala Khan, as this will the character’s first outing that I know of without creator G. Willow Wilson providing her voice. The new Ms Marvel is a character that deserves the sort of large-scale exposure a team-up with Spidey could provide, and I very much hope this issue lives up to its potential.

David: Death Vigil #4

I’ve been following Stjepan Sejic art online for a while, so Death Vigil is a guilty pleasure for me. Sejic’s art is great and the characters in Death Vigil are downright likable. When the Grim Reaper makes Lord of the Rings references and has a thing for cheesy pop music, what’s not to love? Death Vigil could have been published as an online comic, like other Sejic’s projects, but I’m glad to see that Top Cow is printing it as a series.

Bernie was right. Clara would find friends, she would find a family with the Death Vigil, but she would gain enemies as well. Powerful enemies that have waited long enough. The Codex of the Dreamers is all but translated and the Pale Court needs one last ingredient to put their plans in motion – Veilrippers from slain vigil members.

Gaumer: Wytches #1

With Halloween right around the corner, it’s a great time for some quality horror comics, and writer Scott Snyder and artist JOCK have a new title this week that is sure to tingle a spine or two. Wytches promises a deep story with a lot of scares, and I have all the hope that this creative team can deliver.

Across the globe, century after century, men and women were burned, drowned, hanged, tortured, imprisoned, persecuted, and murdered for witchcraft. None of them were witches. They died protecting a terrible and hidden truth: witches, real witches, are out there. They are ancient, elusive, and deadly creatures that are rarely seen and even more rarely survived. This October, superstar creators SCOTT SNYDER (SEVERED, Batman) and JOCK (SNAPSHOT, Batman) unveil WYTCHES, and introduce you to a world of unimaginable horror in a special EXTRA-SIZED FIRST ISSUE with 30 pages of story and no ads for just $2.99

Jules: Avengers #36 and AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #1 (OF 9)

Unlinke a certain other member of the Outright Geekery Crew I feel like I’ve gone all in with Marvel. I absolutely love what Hickman is doing with the Avengers right now, a shift change is long overdue. I like all the changes , well most that I’ve seen so far. The Avengers Now looks like its gonna give some new life to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes the way Superior did for Spider-Man. I also think Rick Remender has been on fire for a while now and can say I’m absolutely all in for the idea of him heading an Event. Say what you will about the constant amount of events, if they’re a good story then I’m ready for another. These two are top of my list, with two of my favorite writers.

Adam: Batman #35

Whether Zero Year was your cup of tea or not , you can not deny that Snyder’s run on the Dark Knight has been anything other that spectacular. With that in mind, of course I’m gonna be excited when Snyder begins a new story arc, especially when one promised to be a game changing as this one. I can’t wait!
