Now I know what you are thinking, who cares about Ultimate Marvel? Well for one JulesTrue does, and I’m here to let you know it’s pretty frickin awesome if you give it a chance. Once a week I’m gonna hit you with a story arc from the Ultimate Marvel Universe starting from the beginning. I’ll spotlight on whats brilliant, what’s not so brilliant, and what might be a good idea for the 616!
This time I’m diving into the second title to join the Ultimate Universe! The Success of the recently launched Ultimate Spider-Man gave the folks at Marvel a hunch they were onto something. The whole translation of classic characters into the modern age seeing how they would cope in this new digital age was brilliant. So they figured which characters would translate just as well for a whole new generation of readers. Well the answer was easy especially since the success of Fox’s X-Men movie which had created a big buzz around the characters once again. However as we all no there isn’t exactly an easy jumping on point for the Children of the Atom. So Marvel did the next best thing to rebooting the X-Men and created the Ultimate X-Men!. From the Creative powers of Mark Millar, Adam and Andy Kubert!
Immediately the Ultimate are set apart from their 616 counterparts. The Government has unleashed their Sentinel Program, while Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants has declared war on Humanity. Ok so somethings are the same. However what is very different is the cast assembled in the opening. Hank Mcoy a large young man which a larger chip on his shoulder. Ororo Monroe a petty thief who is busted out of jail. Peter Rasputin a member of the Russian Mob who leaves after a sour deal. These young mutants all recuited by Jean Grey representing Charles Xavier. In their own way each of them agree to come to the school not really having a place to go. There they meet Scott Summers fellow student of Jean, and soon to be team leader. Scott who explains that as long as they are in X-Men uniform they will call him Cyclops and has them rattle off their new given codenames.
The team’s first mission to help and retrieve a young mutant by the name of Bobby Drake. While looking for him in New York City they run into Sentinels. With the help of young Bobby Drake they are able to stop the Sentinels and get away. Meanwhile in the Savage Land Magneto and his Brotherhood are lurking. Magento see’s the X-Men on television and knows immediately Xavier had a hand in it. Magneto decides to send is personal assassin to take care of Xavier, the Wolverine. While making his way to take out the Professor, Wolverine run’s into some people from his past. Having been taken by surprise he is captured by a group called Weapon X. The X-Men are sent to save Wolverine.
Wolverine is invited to join the X-Men which he does very quickly. Immediately Wolverine becomes a pain in just about everyone’s neck. Training harder and harsher then everyone else on the team. Magneto decides to kidnap the President’s Daughter and make the incident public. The X-Men are sent after him an to rescue the President’s daughter as an act of kindness between mutants and humans. The mission doesn’t exactly go according to plan, in fact much of it is a disaster. Beast is put into critical conditon and Magneto shames the X-Men and just lets them go. After returning from their mission a lot of turmoil is left in the team. Jean and Wolverine decided to become an item, while Cyclops decides to leave the team and join the Brotherhood.
Sometime after rescuing the President’s daughter they are thanked personally by the President himself. Meanwhile Cyclops adjusts to life with the Brotherhood. Cyclops finds himself constantly clashing with his former foe Quicksilver son of Magneto. While the X-Men are visiting with the President apparently the government has tracked Magneto and found the Savage Land. The President ultimate decides to send an army of Sentinels after him, the Professor does his best to explain that their are many innocent mutants living in the savage land but his words are shrugged off. The ensuing battle takes many lives as the Sentinels begin their onslaught on the Savage Land. However the attack gets turned upside down when Magneto takes control of the Sentinels and decided to use them to attack Washington D.C.!
What happens next is mos certainly the very epic climax. Magneto’s attack on D.C. is met not only with resistance from the X-Men but also from Cyclops with Magneto’s children Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Doing all they can to stop him the X-Men are pressed thin by the combination of Magneto and the Sentinels. What takes Magneto by surprise isn’t the betrayal of his children but of Wolverine’s decision to side with Xavier. And let with no choice Professor X decides to step in to stop his former friend.
Honestly this was a solid way to start a title. If you’re an X-Men fan this a fun read. if you’ve never read the X-Men and wanna start somewhere this is a good place to start. Ultimate X-Men does a good job at maintaining the core of the characters with separating itself from its 616 counterparts. Mark Millar does a great job with creating a new honest, young X-Men for a more modern generation. Both Kubert brothers do a smashing job with delivering a great uniform look to the Ultimate X-Men!
