Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: August 13th, 2014

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Taylor: Captain Marvel #6

The first arc comes to its conclusion as Carol faces down the Spartax with the fate of an alien race on the line. This relaunched series has been good, popcorn movie fun, and I’m optimistic that Captain Marvel’s heroic stand will end things on a high note.

• THE BATTLE ISSUE. Space! Ships! Super heroes!
• Captain Marvel has been caught in the middle of an interplanetary turf war for weeks.
• Now, it’s time for Earth’s Mightiest Hero to get her hands dirty and show the Spartax and the Haffensye what’s what.

Adam: Transformers Primacy #1.

I’m a huge transformers and Godzilla fan so idw is trying really hard to take all my money this week. Anyways, Primacy, if it is the same quality as Autocracy and Monstrosity, aims to be great another addition to the surprisingly good idw transformers line and I’m excited to see what’s in store for the robots in disguise.

THE WAR FOR CYBERTRON! Optimus Prime versus Megatron. Autobots versus Decepticons. At the dawn of the conflict, battle lines are drawn and sides are set… now legends will be made. The war that would define a planet begins in earnest—and its revelations will shake the TRANSFORMERS’ world to the core!

Gaumer: Death Vigil #2

Maybe the best ish #1 I’ve read all year, Death Vigil is a supernatural action thriller that’s one part Spawn, one part NYPD, and totally awesome. Writer/Artist/Cover Artist/Letterer and all-around busy guy Stjepan Sejic is putting down a great comic book, and everything from the story to the word balloons bears his singular style. Can’t wait to get my hands, and lay my eyes, on issue #2 of this surprising hit.

Clara Jenkins never had many friends. Then she joined Death Vigil…and she gained many friends. The end! Oh…and of course there is that whole small print deal about the League of Necromancers who aligned themselves with a world-devouring enemy of all life, can summon unholy abominations to do their bidding, and seek to destroy the vigil above all else…

Jules: Godzilla Cataclysm #1

I know exactly what you’re thinking, a Godzilla comic? Well why I might be a fan of Cullen Bunn, he has as of late begun to surprise me. Honestly Dave Wachter is most of the reason I wanna grab this issue. The preview art is spectacular Wachter does a grab job of capturing some of my most beloved Toho monsters in between pages. Over the years many different publishers have taken stabs at my favorite Radioactive Giant Monster, but few have accomplished what IDW have with being able to incorporate many of the other Toho Monsters! Best part too is this is a Mini-Series so you know they’re not gonna drag it out.

Years have passed since the monster apocalypse nearly destroyed mankind. Now it is merely a distant, nightmarish memory for Hiroshi, an elder in one of the few remaining tribes of humans. Little does Hiroshi know that the apocalypse is not over, and that his memories of the past may yet save the future!
