Geeks’ Picks for New Comics: June 18th, 2014

outright-geekery Logo NewNew Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. What are you looking forward to reading this week?

Jules: The Wicked + The Divine #1

The creative team behind last years Young Avengers are back with an all new indie title. Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie have once again joined forces to deliver a wonderfully honest and illustrious story! Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critically thermonuclear floor-fillers Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to start a new ongoing superhero fantasy with a beautiful oversized issue. Welcome to THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, where gods are the ultimate pop stars. But remember: just because you’re immortal, doesn’t mean you’re going to live forever. This just sounds like its gonna be a cool read and it more than likely will.

Taylor: Thor: God of Thunder #23

We finally reach the epic conclusion of The Last Days of Midgard, with King Thor and our Thor doing their all to defend earth in parallel stories. With each passing month, this series continues to feature one of the best combinations of a writer and artist perfectly suited to the right character. I’m looking forward to a showstopping end.

Christian: The New 52 – Futures End #7

The thing I like most about this weekly book from DC Comics is the way it’s slowly weaving multiple threads of mystery into what is lining up to be a very fun story, and doing that while making the expected slow-crawl of a weekly title interesting along the way. Although I’m really ready for this book to give me some meat with those potatoes, I think this is going to be the ish that cements Futures End as a must read story, and it’s on the top of my stack this week.

Five years from now, the DC Universe is reeling from a war with another Earth, leaving the world unprepared for an approaching evil that threatens to destroy the future. Can a time-traveling Batman Beyond help a massive cast of the DCU’s finest avert the impending apocalypse? Find out in this new weekly series that will forever alter the direction of The New 52!

Gaumer: Uncanny X-Men #22

Despite two weekly books from DC and Marvel’s Original Sin event in my stack this week, I’m really not that stoked about this week’s offerings. Uncanny X-Men has come to a fun point in its story, as Dazzler of all people is sure to be severely pissed off and out for some vengeance. I’d be upset too if I was kidnapped, drugged into a coma, and milked for mutant growth hormone. Look out, Mystique, things are about to get complicated.
